Sony/Minolta Flash question

For many years I have been a satisfied user of the 3500 series flash with my Maxxum 5 and 7 film cameras. Having bought an A100 on clearance a few months ago I am now in the market for a new flash unit and am leaning towards the HVL42AM. Have any Maxxum film users used the 42AM flash with film cameras? If so, would they mind commenting on compatibility with the Maxxum 5, 7 and older film cameras, particularly in respect of wireless functions?
