Going through Hong Kong: Advice to (not) buy, and/or where

A business trip to China would give me the opportunity to stay two nights in Hong Kong. The cheap prices there of course are a temptation, especially for me lusting after a 16-80 and/or 70-300G for my A700. But of course there are drawbacks, especially when it comes to warranty, partially alleviated only by Sony's 1 year tourist warranty.

So what is your feeling: Take a risk and buy there - and if so, are there any recommended shops - or better save, wait and buy local?

Personally I would buy from Hong Kong. Just try it there and if everything is satisfactory, then go ahead.

Oh, much too early. And I just did the maths with customs and taxes - the prices come out a lot less attractive if you don't resort to clandestine imports...

In the UK, Sony will honour a 12 month warranty on any equipment purchased overseas, so you have no problem there.

Regarding prices, you do need to be a little bit careful of vendors offering to sell you a worldwide warranty (not required!) which is in addition to the wonderful low price they quoted to you earlier. They will insist that it is compulsory.

But get them to sign up your warranty card for you and you're sorted.
