But I'm always quite conscious of zooming harm to optics if the air is too humid, smelly/smoky or if the air just feels 'heavy' somehow...

Well, I never stay, I move along knowing that all the real photo stuff I own is expendable. I just spend that stuff quite knowingly 8)

Now, talking real world, how this air can damage a nice prime like the SAM 35f1.8 or the SAM 85f2.8? Had you ever seen this situation happening, or you are just guessing?
