Case/Hood solutions for the Minolta 80-200mm HS APO G

Unread post by bfitzgerald »

Thought this might be of use
I got the original hood with the lens, but yearned for something a bit less damageable and something that is deeper - and pretty much disposable ie provides protection
The one you are after is the HB-7II, I got one on eBay for under €4 delivered! This is for the Nikon 80-200mm evidently, but a small modification on the lugs means it's a great fit for the Minolta
I used a Swiss army knife file to remove the plastic parts which sit proud, then fine sandpaper/metal polish to finish it off

Note the raise plastic areas you need to remove

Some shots of the hood it's pretty big, but it's a good fit and if you bust it/lose it hardly worth worrying. The plastic is super flexible it's pretty unlikely you will crack it, another good point
Some shots showing it. It does not contact the collar/base plate when reversed, and covers a good portion of the lens, Again offering a bit more protection from impacts when reversed

Onto the case the one you are after is the JJC DLP-5II
The sizes up from this are much larger (width/length) and as the 80-200mm is fairly compact this one is better suited

Amazon link in case you need it:
https://amzn.to/3mpKLAe

Front/rear caps and filter with hood fits perfectly (you can adjust the tension on the outside via the buckles)
No movement with that hood either it wedges in there holding the lens in place
Padding is decent not much different to the Tamrac ones I have, you get a strap/padded part and velcro on the back with a mesh pouch to store the caps. Quite impressed so far and reasonable price. Hopefully of some use in case you are looking for either/both!

I have no problem with the original hood, but good to know! Thanks.
