a700 + TC + beercan

I want to get a longer reach with my a700 but don't necessarily need the wide range (or expense) of the 70-300 SSM. I was wondering then, which teleconverters will work between the a700 and my 70-210/4 without compromising any functionality. Do any of you have success stories or cautionary advice?

There was some treads on this a while ago. rich99 recommends this one but there is also a canon thats been recommended. these go on the front of the lens. and you won;t lose the usually 2 stops of light and the BC should still AF just fine with it on. I don't think it's a substitute for a longer lens though but the image quality seems reasonable good none the less. Over on Dyxum there was some testing done with a beercan and a regular TC but they image quality was a lot worse than you get here.

I have the beercan and the Tamron 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters. It works ok, but you loose quality. If you scale the 200mm pic up or if you use 200+1.4 TX, there was not much between (but I didn't make any scientific tests). Worse with the 2.0, also AF is rather erratic/not working. This was tested with the KM5D, haven't used the TC on the A700 yet.

Hmmm, thank you! I didn't even think of the loss of IQ and how it might compare to simply scaling up the image. I was just looking for a cheap way to extend the long end of my kit. I suppose there isn't a cheap way unless your tele lenses are fast enough and outresolve your sensor already.
