A soviet made lens of 135mm f/3.5
Quite soft wide open even at the center. Haven't tried with smaller apertures yet, but will add to this thread once ready.

I really need to close the aperture at f/8 and repeat the test.

Doesn't look too bad Doc, at least I'm guessing that the price was right and it looks like it can take quite a good photo into the bargain.

The Jupiter 37A 135 mm 1:3.5 clearly is a lens which has 'character.' Resolution seems okay (can't really tell from the web images) but contrast is low and colour transmission is laid-back. In purely technical terms, it's a poor lens by today's standards. Still it definitely is worthwhile. It breathes the air of the '50s and '60s ... it creates a very special atmosphere which will suit sujets which are supposed to express either harmony, romance, and idyll or sadness, melancholy, and loneliness. I guess slight over-exposure will emphasize the particular lens character while under-exposure will push it back.

Furthermore it tends to create fairly open shadows which can help with high-dynamic subjects.

A similar characteristic (if somewhat less pronounced) can be found in many Minolta Rokkor, Auto-Rokkor, and early MC Rokkor lenses from the '60s.

Did you note that I said, 'I guess ...'? So please try bracketing---if you don't then don't blame me when you're getting poor results!

By the way, I am talking about a small increase in exposure, like e. g. +1/3 or +1/2 EV. Of course, going for real high-key may be worth a try, too ...

Hey that looks very good to me. I have an old Konica AR-mount Hexanon lens, 135mm F3.5 (I think), could it be mounted to one of those extension bellows and used for macro photography? For what i know there is no way to mount a AR-lens to a Alpha system?

Those macro shots are great Doc. Seems to be fantastic results from your unusual set up. Perhaps you should start posting the zoomed in shots first, and then we could try and guess what it the picture is of?
