Well I had made a bid on an F2.8 zoom on ebay for adaptall 2 mount. and also on an adaptor in another auction. I lost the lens and the adaptor but I have an Ebay 2nd chance on the adaptor, is it worth picking up ? there are alot of adaptall lenses that come up really cheap but theres more M42 lenses that come up. I don't intend to have a huge collection of MF lenses but I have a few MD and what I want is a fast zoom and a couple fast primes

Yes, why not buy the adaptor. I keep two or three M42 adaptors around just for use if needed.

My recommendation is to target more Adaptall to M42 , and an buy an M42 to Alpha. But in this case you have to lock the aperture control for the Adaptall to M42 adapter (to make full control on the lens attached). This is the easiest way to make working properly Adaptall lens on Sony camera (instead the A100 and A700)
I am actually experimenting the 24mm F/2.5 adaptall and like any other adtaptall lens I Have got before, I can strongly recommended those old beauties

.
Even non SP lens are good. There is a lot of review on the lens and you can review it before to buy.
Prime lens are easier to use, because you just have to focus on the focus ring

. If you are getting zoom lens, you will have to think about two movement (but most of the old zoom was design to push or pull back to make the zoom to help ...

).
Lens i have tried on the Sony A900 and was really good :
200mm F/3.5
300mm F/2.8 (i still have this lens, and use it with rare 200f adapter).
2x 01f adapter is good, but not as the 200f.
I supposed to received the 35-210mm F/3.5-4.2 , I will probably post comment on the lens when I will got it.
Regards,
Frank

I did get the adaptor. or payed for it anyway. it's comming. it's a tamron adaptall/maxxum adaptor. and I see M42/maxxum adaptors too. Frank are you saying that I would be better off to stack adaptors? like Camera -> M42/Adaptall -> adaptall/M42? why would that be?
About the lenses (zoom or prime). I have no problem with zooming and focusing. I was pretty good with my X700. My best lens was a 70-200 F2.8 (constant)Sigma but those lenses were made to operate that way these modern AF lenses really aren't. I don't think i will have any trouble. Also I understand that on the A700 with manual lenses focus trap works pretty well so it'll even be better this way. I actually haven't bought an adaptor yet to use my MD lenses or my bellows yet. I wanted a macro flash first but with my sports forray I think I may try that siggy next time I go out so I will order one soon. I have a minolta 2x adaptor that fits MD to AF mount (link below, guys got 5 new ones!) but it's the -s one that only works up to 300mm (actually theres a question.. does it's range include 300mm or up to?) but it sure doesn't work on my sigma zoom but works very well on m my primes.

Camera -> M42 Confirm focus -> M42/Adaptall -> Adaptall lenses
The Minolta S and L 2X adapter are not really good ... (the S for shorter than 300mm)
I have done some tests with two batch and never found the adapter as good as I expected for a Minolta adapter. The lost of 2 stop of light and the 2x of magnification make your lenses become not really useful (and I'm not talking about the lost of detail). If you really want to keep good MD lens ... you should modify it to fit Maxxum mount. In some case like the 58mm F/1.2, the screw are exactly at the same place than the original Minolta Alpha mount Metal back lens. But for other lens, you have to make your own screw hole.
This is almost the same story for Evey cheap glass adapter MD/A Adapter that kept about ~1.3x stop and get magnification of 1.3x.

I'm not following this conversation, guys. What do you mean by "adaptor"? The Tamron SP 01F and 200F are 2X teleconverters, as opposed to the adaptall-2 alpha/Maxxum mount that connects to either the adaptall-2 lens or the teleconverter. I have the Tamron SP 300/5.6 telemacro lens, which I bought about 30 years ago to use with my OM-2. I also have the 140F 1.4X TC and the 01F 2X TC (which I don't recall ever using). I was able to pick up an alpha/Maxxum mount on ebay this summer and have started using the 300/5.6 on my A700, mostly for flower shots, both with and without the 1.4X TC. Unfortunately, my use was limited this summer because subsequent cataract surgery made it difficult for me to manual focus. For the handful of shots I was able to take, I was pleased by the sharpness, color and bokeh.

Thats my fault. I was talking about adaptors so I could fit M42 and tamron/pentax adaptall lenses. Frank mentioned his teleconverters and I mentioned my 2x minolta TC which also adapts manual focus MD lenses to AF bodies.
