I've just been reading a photo mag and there is an advert for a samyang 800mm f8 reflex and a 500mm f6.3, costs are 300 pounds and 200 pounds plus the cost of a T2 mount depending on your make of camera at about 14 to 16 pounds. Has anyone any further info on these, I also believe they are manual focus only.

The T-2 is purely a mechanical adaptor between the lens and the camera lens mount. It will not provide any camera to lens functions and so would not only require manual focus but stopped down metering.

These lenses are fixed aperture so there is no way to open the aperture basically what you see in the VF at F8 is what you get. from other psots I gather these lenses are not very good. need a lot of light and need to add a lot of contrast in post

The Sony 500 mirror is also an F8 lens, is it not? And if you're doing manual focus and a fixed F-stop there are no issues with having to have a lot of contrast or stopping the lens down. The lens quality, however, I can't speak to.

the Minolta and sony 500 reflex are autofocus lenses . and are also F8 but they are much better quality than these samyang ones (judging by the posts on them and samples from dyxum and DPR) the pictures come out very bleached looking which is whyyn they need contrast in post .

for stop down metering and no AF (like using MD lenses) you need to open the aperture. focus. close the aperture to whatever you want and shoot. these are fixed at F8 so if there isn't enough light to manually focus with (because you can't open it to a larger aperture like with a regular lens) then you have to guess and hope for the best.

The Minolta design is a catadioptric (mirror and dioptric lenses) hybrid of very high quality. Can't say what the Samyang is. Most mirror lenses are low contrast because stray light easily gets into the big spaces involved. Pure mirror lenses (no glass elements) are termed catoptic. Very few exist.
