testing a lens, methods

got the sigma 70-200 2.8 hsm today.

can anybody tell me the best way to test focus etc on this lens

To check AF, I put the camera on a tripod at closest possible focus range, almost level (slightly above) with my keyboard.
Aperture priority, full open, lowest ISO, MLU, aim a key (for me the bend in the U), shoot. The important part is, AF should be possible on what you point to, so something flat without contrast will not do.

Etc..., I don´t know, leave that to others, but I think it boils down to pixel peeping for resolution and sharpness, personal preferences for colors, contrast and other subjective criteria.
