Zeiss guys - one had a personal NEX-5 with his 35mm f/2.8 Biogon attached on a Voigltander (Novoflex) adaptor. He had the 24mm f/2 on an A900 body to demo, so I borrowed the 24mm f/2 and did one of my 2-minute optical tests (if a lens passes this, it's good) - answer, buy! It's more than good. I'll show you later when we get home.

On the lens stand, A55 with 16-80mm, NEX-5 with adaptor and 16-80mm, NEX VG-10 video cam with 16-80. A900 with 24mm. A55 with 24mm. A900 with 135mm f/1.8 - basically, alongside Canon and Nikon bodies fitted with CZ glass, plenty of Alpha. And most of the people on the stands use NEX. The SanDisk chief exec uses NEX.

Sony is really winning.

Stop telling these NEX success stories - my resistance starts to break down :D

Bossel will not be the last individual tempted by the NEX5. Look at the Japanese statistics for 21 Sept here http://bcnranking.jp/category/subcategory_0008.html putting NEX5 in 5th and 6th position in Japan. Incidentally the A55 is 7th. Not bad at all considering.

OK - update on the 24mm f/2 - I may have been hasty in my praise. It's certainly very good indeed but I have been very surprised to see, in the raw conversions, very clear colour bokeh effects creating distinct green and magenta zones ranging from o-o-f tints to hard lines almost like CA (wide open, of course).

On the one hand, it's so sharp that a Seimens star test target pinned on the Zeiss stand, shot from over the counter wide open, is resolved to the limit and every single dot of print on the boxes in the same focus plane is sharp. On the other hand, it misfocused badly on one shot (no explanation, I thought the shot was focused OK) and the colour bokeh effect would need further investigation.

Congratulations.
And I am tempted by the A55.

Well, you know what to do, Bossel; :D

Have fun at your end and show us what you thought of the whole bundle!

Now, why is there no such trial option of 'promotional' here at my end ? !!

The new cameras do sound exciting and they have managed to stir the camera-buyers in an altogether different way.

Thanks for this info David, you probably know I'm a Zeiss guy :D so I'm looking forward to hearing the conclusions.

Cheers, Bob.

Hello David, had you reviewed the Zeiss 24mm F2 yet? I might have missed it...?

No, I have tried it briefly at photokina for a few hand held shots wide open and some shots placing details at the corners of the picture, and a centered shot of the Zeiss lens resolution target (admittedly at ISO 320).

From this brief test of about six frames shot on my A900 I conclude there is no need to test it. It's exactly what is expected, very slightly soft wide open but with a bitingly sharp 'core' to the image, and one of the best lenses you could imagine when stopped down.

If they ever send me one to test, I'll do so. I can not afford to buy one and don't actually need a lens of that size and weight for everyday work. All I did at photokina (on the CZ stand, not on the Sony stand) was a very quick testing method I use which could tell me without using charts, handheld, very rapidly, what sort of lens I am dealing with.

The 24mm f/2 is up there with the best lenses ever made and on my A900 it also focused perfectly.
