COKIN filters - Quality of Image?

To improve my landscape shots I am pondering the purchase of Cokin Filters, especially the Split-ND varieties, to avoid the two-exposure-combination techniques which require a tripod and quite some time on the computer.
Does anybody have experience with the influence of the cokin filters on image quality? are the chinese replicas worth even the small money they cost, are the singh-ray varieties worth the big money - or is it much better in the end to use that two exposure technique in order to not sacrifice image quality aka sharpness?
Regards - Markus
