I picked up the 70-210 Beercan and I love it but I do wish I had a lens with a little more reach. Maybe up to 400mm for birds, deer ect. What would be a good lens for my a850 that wouldn't break the bank?

Well, I don't know what your limit for 'breaking the bank' is, but the 70-400G is worth every penny. Maybe second hand is an option.

The question is, what is your non-bank-breaking number? If it's $600 there are several options: Minolta APO 100-400 zoom, Minolta 500mm reflex, Sigma 400 APO Macro (insist on the "Macro" - the other Sigma APO is not worth buying) and I'm sure a lot of others. If your number is more like $400 IMHO you'd be better off getting to be an expert using software and cropping and the beercan at f8.

You have to remember that it's only been a few years since we were all using 6MP sensors. With your full-frame 24MP sensor your beercan works like a 400mm lens on a 6MP sensor. (I think - math check anyone?)

Below 800 would be not breaking the bank. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look around.

I can second that, I have Tamron 200-500 and Sony 70-400 and the difference between them is very small,you will need the photo`s side by side on the computer and even then without the EXIF data you will be hard pushed to say which is which, at some lengths the Sony is better at others the Tamron wins, it is that good, for the price it`s unbeatable, if you can find a well cared for example second hand you will not be disapointed.
