Unread post by gio67 »

I'm going on a safari early next year and need to buy a superzoom, any ideas, I'm leaning towards the Sony at 50GBP more expensive,I am taking the sony a 580 and the nex 5n, I have the LA_EA2 adaptor.
thanks in anticipation

I have the Sony 18-250 and it's good, but if we're talking the Sigma OS HSM version I'd be choosing that unless you have lens size and weight concerns. With any luck you'll then have an OS capable lens to attach to your NEX with the adaptor.

David has reviewed the Sigma previously:

decision day today,
the Tamron 18-270 has entered the fray.
I have had a very good offer for a mint Sony 18-250
I'm still angling towards the Sigma, mainly based on Davids review
and now the Tamron has entered the fray.

do I get the sony e mount 18-200 lose phase detection focus and be unable to use it on my a580, or do I get the A mount and use it on both and benefit phase detection when I use it with LA EA2,but lose autofocus on video.
do I get the Sigma 18-250/270 or the Sigma 18-250

any help will be much appreciated

Remember, if you can find an old stock original model 1 Sigma 18-250mm it has OS.

If you intend to shoot video on the NEX with adaptor, this is every bit as good as the 18-200mm Tamron VC, and it also works for video on the A580 - which very few lenses can. In fact, when you start using in-lens OS on the 580, you may switch to that from SSS.

I do not think the new 18-250mm Sigma comes with OS for Sony, but I could be wrong. The Tamron 18-270mm definitely has no VC for Alpha mount.

With the LA-EA2 the Sigma has AF during video on NEX. It has a ver smooth HSM focus motor.

thats tipped the balance David, most of the sigmas I've looked at have OS, and now ordered from direct from amazon at £322.00

I think they build them to match Nikon. Enjoy!

I have the 18-250mm OS HSM and the A550 feels like a new camera :)
was using the old sigma 17-50 and tamron 70-300 Di, the tamron was OK but suffered badly from CA and the sigma was just bad...

Sigma 18-250 OS HSM is just great, (unskilled opinion :) )
