Sony A800 - won't process photos

Hi All,
I'm hoping for some advice. My A800 has stopped working properly. The settings work, you can turn it on set it up press the shutter and it sounds like it will take a shot, but then it doesn't process it. The red light just stays on as if it is doing something - but it does nothing. It won't turn off even. I have to take the battery out. Then when you next turn it on it hasn't saved the shot.
Does this spell doom or can it be repaired?
