Depends on the lens. Our old Canon original IS 75-300mm caused seasickness any day, awful swimming image. The new Nikon 70-200mm VRII I tried last week is amazing. It jumps to lock stable view instantly, and you never see the image float or wander. It beats any Canon I have used to date. Tamron VC is also very stable, more so than Sigma OS which has a distinct Crystal Quest effect (Mac veterans will know what that means - so will anyone with one of those spring loaded long dog leads...)
