It wasn't a CCD it was CMOS, and it was the forerunner of the 12 megapixel CMOS used by the Nikon D2X, having the same pixel architecture just a 1.7X factor instead of a 1.5X factor. That line of development ended with the D2Xs and Sony went in a slightly different direction for the EXMOR 12 megapixel CMOS of the A700, D300. David

No doubt David is right. I just thought Sony were not into CMOS at that time. Could'nt find the Instruction Book to check. I am just going through some images my son took with my old R1 early last year and they reminded me of the sheer quality of that 10Mp CMOS sensor and fixed CZ 16-80mm lens. I used to uprate the R1 images to 65-70Mb for Alamy and you would'nt note the difference. Absolutely amazing. What a pity the EVF and screen were so sub-standard. And you never got dust on the sensor.
