ALPHA 100 FIRMWARE UPDATE.

I current have an Alpha 100 with Version 1.00. I have looked at the Sony Website to obtain update version (1.04). I can follow the instructions OK, but am confused in that the base of my Camera says EU only, however when I go to the Europe website (as per instructions) I get the Asian version.

I might add that I live in and purchased the camera in Australia.

The confusion lies in that the instructions are very specific as to what area you choose.

Guidance/direction is welcomed.

Hi.
It might be best to give Sony a call on this, there doesn't seem to be anything on the Oz website any more concerning the A100 and firmware upgrades. I originally downloaded and installed the 1.02 upgrade at Sony Style Aust. (when it was available) but I never bothered looking for the 1.04 version as I heard some not so good reports about it, can't remember the details though, but hopefully Sony should be able to claify what is still available and applicable for our model.
Mine also has "for EU only" on the bottom label so I understand the confusion, it doesn't seem to make much sense as the Sony corporate website divides the world up into Asia pacific, the US, Europe etc, maybe there are subdivisions based on language...hard to say.

Thanks for your reply Greg. I will give Sony a try at their Melbourne Store tomorrow.

I am at least pleased that I am not the only one being confused.

Hello Nino Xerri, :)

Welcome to the forum nice to have you here!

Just out of curiosity, when did you purchase your A100? I ask because I bought my A100 in November 2007, which is a year ago, and my A100 came with the latest firmware V1.04 already installed out of the box. I live in Istanbul, Turkey, and maybe Sony delivers differently to Turkey perhaps?

I'm trying to figure out if you bought from the first ever batch of A100 or if it's of a newer production date and still is only installed with the V 1.0? It seems just strange that some A100's could not be updated with 1.04...I wonder what the cause of this can be?

Thanks,
Yildiz

If I remember correctly there are 3 versions - US, Europe and Asia, and Australia uses the Asian version. There is no external indication onthe camera as to the firmware region so ignore what you see on the base. The label you are looking at I think refers to an EU requirement for content, or disposal.

The camera will not let you load the wrong version, so you could simply try to load the version that you downloaded.

It turns out there is a seperate Australian-NZ edition of firmware upgrade 1.04 seperate from the version "For Asia Pacific Region (Excluding Australia and New Zealand)".
For those of you who own an A100 purchased in Australia or NZ use the link below, (if you wish to install 1.04) and download the applicable upgrade.

ps. According to the information provided the only thing 1.04 does is upgrade the fimware for the 55-200 lens, so one does wonder why you would need seperate regional downloads too accomplish that, (apart from the language issue)...maybe the lens rom needs a translator included in the update...who knows :?:

pps. This is a usefull page as well, though some of the links seem a little dodgy, it might be a case of work in progress.
