i already ordered the A700 and we're going down (25ft) to get the camera and the brand new tameron 70-200 77mm that was on it.. w/ the tripod that flipped off the boat... can any of this gear be salvaged or is it shot? i guessed i could send the camera back to sony.. and possibly the lens could dry and be used again.... maybe

Well, the tripod shouldn't be a problem. I wish you the best of luck with recovery and re-use. I had an XG-M that landed in the Tapajos - a tributary of the Amazon - but only for a few moments, and after drying was fine.

In the film days I remember an article that said to boil, then cool, water (that removes the O2) and then place your camera in it until you get to a repair shop. That helps displace the dirty water with clean water that has no O2 and therefore cannot corrode elements of the camera. Don't know if I would want to try the same with a digital, but the idea still seems sound. After all, if it's been submerged already- especially if its in salt water, clean water can only help.

sounds like a good idea.. it's fresh water thank goodness.. .and as far as lakes go.. extremely clean.

The camera will be a write-off, the Tamron could possibly be repaired if dismantled into individual components and cleaned then reassembled in clean room conditions. That would cost more than the lens is worth. I once let a CZ pocket telescope get into a washing machine. Sure, it was dry after recovery, but always so hazy from the film left on lens surfaces I could not get at - it was useless.

Just leave it there, might get fossilized or just plan confuse the poop out of an archeologist some day.

Strange things can happen tho, a workmate had a horrible experience, his daughter put the camera (Dimage P&S) in the outboard well....and forgot, when they were out on the ocean and had caught their first fish, Dad says "where's the camera" Daughter points towards the outboard motor with stricken expression, and there it was slopping around in the salt water, they kept/transported it in it's original packing box but water had still got on and possibly in the camera...after shaking and flicking the water off Dad took a couple of photos and it worked ok, and continued too work for about a year after.
I quipped, "a camera with a plimsol line" and how come you didn't get it serviced it might have lasted a long time? He said that they were not bothered and they were going to replace it sooner or later with a waterproof camera (as a fishing camera) anyway, they later bought a Pentax Optio something or other, but I never saw a photo from it, it got stolen off the front seat of their car a short time later...they don't have much luck with cameras it seems.

Check out this thread. too bad the pictures are gone. but I can tell you there wasn't much damage The focus ring was a little wonky but the lens unit was intact and the body had the seams open up a little bit. he was lucky the camera continued to function perfectly.
