There's a bit of discussion now and then in the 'Flash' forum, also DK wrote a good article some time ago, reviewing the flashes available at that time...

Is there a modern equivalent to the CG-1000? I used that a lot at one time.

Not from Sony. and not made to supply battery power for the flash but there are 3rd party frames. I just haven't seen one that fits batteries.
