OK my a700 is out of warranty and the mirror is sliding out of its bracket. seems that somehting is missing that should hold the mirror in. Anyone else have this problem. How much do you think this will cost. And what Sony dslr should I buy as a replacement/back up.

Hi, Cory. Long time no see.
I don't think the mirror fixing issue is a big problem and I'm sure it'll be fixed in no time (it should anyway).
As for a replacement/back up, as far as I remember you're more on wildlife photography and telephotos (zoom or fixed focal) are your mainstay, so IMHO an A350 or A550 should suite you well. Opting for the latter would give you a better high ISO rendering. Read David's article on that issue.
Good luck with your A700 fixing and 2nd body purchase. :D

$458.00 flat rate repair fee..sheesh, it was one small piece of plastic that fell off of the mirror.

Then fix it the sensible way, with a small dab of epoxy resin.

Hmmm, I'd recommend an a700 for backup. :D

Well in lieu of the $458 flat rate repair of my a700, I found an a300 kit (unused) with a batt grip and an 8gig CF card for $400 so I bought it as a back up. I had Sony send me the camera back and found a local Sony authorized repair shop. He says they can fix it for alot less. Dang Sony you are just about to convert me to Nikon.

Retainer, Main Mirror, was the part, professionally installed locally for $30.00 (parts and Labor).

Well, you got an exceptionally useful backup camera for a very good price with those extras - and evidence that Sony cameras can be repaired for less than it costs to get someone to fit a new washer to a tap...
