Man, do I want Sony to announce something on this front. With the right specs and right price, I THINK this will be my next camera. Not as a replacement to my 900, but as a nice compliment. Salivating over the thought of 15fps...

15 fps was a rumour from a sports photographer in Australia who claimed to have had sight of future Alphas. I have not heard anything for a year or so from this source. It could be the 10 fps was what he was given to work with but he was not told the specs. Who knows!

Yes the A77 might well be my next camera also although a NEX 7 might give it a close run.

Smaller and lighter are really what I am wanting now - but with out giving up IQ and interchangeable lenses. I don't care if I have to work around some issues - if I am not carrying the camera because it is to heavy then I am not taking any pictures.

Sony seems to be leading on this path right now.

I'd "settle" for 5 FPS per second if a camera had a good optical viewfinder.

It's just an assumption but I guess anyone who does bird photography would be delighted with high fps and phase detection AF.

Did any of you see the October 15 A77 rumour on Photoalpharumor.com entitled "(SR3) Is that the new Sony Alpha 77 design???" This is based on a Sony patent. It looks as if the A77 may be a rather complicated "all singing all dancing" beast. I think that it was David K. who was told the the A77 would be "sophisticated" with loads of new technology. Perhaps we are beginning to see just how capable this camera may be. My first reaction was that if this is the new A700 successor it is definitely too complicated for me and my type of photography. If the A55 is "nearly there" to compete with the likes of a 1DIV then this one may leave competition behind if it has 10-15 fps and improved AF over A55 as well as Video capabilities with phase detection etc. Maybe there will be a SSM CZ 16-80 or longer together with the announced 500 mm tele to signify Sony are moving up the "food chain".

The patent talk about a hybrid OVF/EVF might be interesting..sounds impractical but hey I'll give them some room to move here.
As for fps as I've said before more is nice but for many non action shooters it's very low down the want list.

Sony can't rely on fast fps alone to sell translucent or even AF with video. They have to be as good and better than any other maker in other areas. Currently they are making nice consumer cameras but not as appealing for photography enthusiasts, they have to sort that out and fairly fast. And we need to dump this "Sony simple" stuff as well.

All that patent seems to talk about , is blacking out the OVF when the power is turn off.
Sony seems to think that users have no way of telling if a DSLR with OVF is turn on (or gone into sleep mode) while looking through the OVF. Maybe Sony has received a lot of support calls by DSLR users trying to take photos while the camera is turned off or in sleep mode. So they have added a mode to the AF area display layer that can turn the layer black if the power is off or the camera has gone to sleep. Mean if you look through the OVF and the screen is black, that means camera is off or gone to sleep mode or you left the lens cap on.

In that case, it will be an A7XX, not an A77, right?

Suppose an action shooter. What camera will that person choose? Definitely the one with:
1- better AF
2- quicker AF
3- fps
and probably EVF/OVF will be somewhere at the bottom of the wish list.

I'd wager action shooters are a minority among photographers. For other types of shooters... landscape, portrait, macro etc fps is irrelevant to a users needs. I'd also suggest they greatly outnumber action shooters by a wide margin. In short the high fps strategy is targeting a much smaller number of users. If Nikon are happy selling a D7000 with 6fps..I suspect the need for 10fps+ is not a priority among most users. Canon's 5d MkII is a good seller for them..a mere 3.9fps too.
