Now that FW issues are resolved, is the review coming soon?

David mentioned that he was preparing one. I'm eager for reading it too.

Firmware version 1.03 still does not solve the problem of camera crash per two reports at Dyxum.com. After reinserting the batteries, A77 cameras started to function again. (One of them had to use an original battery.)

So far A77 is not exactly a confidence inspiring thing in itself, and now makes me a cynic about Sony camera division.

You can be a cynic, but you can also help solve the problem. Every error report can be used to improve the product. Many modern day cameras have been introduced with toothing pains - not only Sony but Canon and Nikon as well. It's Sony reaction to the problems, how they are fixed, etc. that will ultimately determine their success in the marketplace (and of a particular product). Besides, until the actual process that that described the problematic upgrades are examined, it would be premature to state that the firmware fix didn't fix anything. Fot the majority of A77 owners, the A77 firmware upgrade was a positive experience. As with any small sample size, a flub or two can skew the perceived results.

But for firmware 1.02, there is no way to correct camera crash without sending it back to Sony

This sets out exactly the button press sequence needed to restore life to a crashed 1.02 camera and it probably also works with 1.03. So far 1.03 has been fine for me, but if you read the later full review, you will note that I managed to press buttons in a sequence which left the shutter unable to operate, and both the Single Frame rectangle and the 10 from the self-timer showing at the same time on the LCD. Cured by changing the Drive options again, but the firmware is clearly flaky.

Hi All,
Nikon also have problems I bought an D7000 last week, that had a focusing fault selection, I bought it because on trying the A-77 with firmware 1.02 instaled I did not like the slowness of use, well I took the Nikon back to the shop and they asked me to try the new A-77 stock in with firmware 1.03 already installed, well what a difference it made.
I came away today with a new A-77, so no Nikon, tried my Sigma 17-70mm OS lens on it no problems and don’t expect any with my other lenses.
David did you find the change from firmware 1.02 to 1.03 a vast improvement?

Not having two cameras side by side, I could not say for sure but the responsiveness was/is better, yes. There is still a sort of lag when operating the adjustments which means I sometimes overshoot on changing aperture or exposure correction. I did not find the 1.02 firmware so slow I would have rejected the camera, though, as I have been using an A55 for a year - and even with 1.02 it was far more responsive than the A55.

Hi All again, Thanks Doc I’m sure I will enjoy it.
David I have tried both side by side and can assure you it is like “chalk and cheese” may be the 1.02 version is different inside, the 1.03 one is mine .
I also found the menu system is very straight forward not like Nikon or Canon, (I have owned both brands).
Very similar to my A-580.
I thought I may want a grip fitted to the 77 but it is of a size that I may not want one where as the Nikon D7000 I would definitely require one.
It was just fortunate that the Nikon had a fault and was returned or I may have been buying more expensive lenses for the 7000, just maybe I may save for the 300mm f2.8.
Next week I will have the opportunity to put my new acquisition to the full test at Slimbridge Wetland trust weather permitting, the camera may be weather proof but I am not.
So till then read the hand book and test the settings.
