Over all my cameras, probably Program with shift.

I mostly use Aperture mode. After that it is Manual, when the auto-metering isn't going to give the result I want. Sometimes Shutter, normally for motion blur (but normally use M). Rarely use Scene, just to play around and see what comes up. Sometimes use Auto with Flash when "snapping".

Aperture. I learned to use it to control DOF, and learned that if I want higher shutter speeds, just open up a bit.

Hi,

90% of the time Aperture Priority. I like sampling with different settings so if I have time on my hands like the times at 4 am in the mornings and shooting from a comfort zone I can shoot the same scene in every mode the camera features just to see what happens and how the photo changes each time.

There is a distinction between what mode you pick and what you are really trying to fix.

Modes P(using program shift),A,S are all auto exposures shifted or fixed by Aperture or Shutter Speed.

So if I'm thinking "landscape - max depth of field" I might pick S and set at lowest sharp speed.
If I'm playing around with tripod/macro depth of field I would use A.
If I'm thinking minimal depth of field then could use A.
For indoor flash I use M but that is really fixed shutter at sync speed and I'm changing aperture.

But for all auto shots I might as well use shifted program and that has the advantage that you
can take an instant shot without checking the camera settings. So I leave the camera on P
and turn one of the control dials.

Obviously when auto exposure is not working it is M or use exposure compensation.

I would use program mode if there was an intelligent mode which could lock out the first f-stop on any lens. I use zooms a lot, and for example the 18-250mm Sigma while excellent benefits a great deal from being stopped down about one stop. Even the 28-75mm KM f/2.8 is best used at f/4,

Program mode selects full aperture too much of the time, so I generally use A mode at settings betweemn f/7.1 and f/11 on most lenses.

I nearly always use P with my finger on the wheel to shift the aperture/shutter combination and my thumb on the compensation wheel. I find it the quickest way to get what I want and by standardising it becomes second nature to get the exposure without fumbling :)

Occasionally I use A - particularly when doing lots of close-ups.

I never use M as I no longer have a decent separate meter - without which it means guessing or using the camera's meter - which is self defeating.
