Challenge 20: "Fall Colors" - Submissions

Here's my favourite sycamore/maple tree in the churchyard - always produces this every autumn, only a young tree, next to a path I walk several times a day:

This is an A550 in-camera JPEG at 16mm on the 16-80mm. Not using the Autumn colours preset!

A great challenge Pako, with some fantastic Fall / Autumn ( ) colour. I like Yildiz's alternative interpretation. Here are some pictures from the woods of old England. The weather forecasters are saying that today was the last nice day of Autumn in the UK and that tomorrow storms will blow all of the leaves from the trees. I therefore thought I had better take some pictures today before it all ended.

All with the Tamron 17-50







(I thought it would be a nice contrast to have the oldest Sony alpha coming after the newest .)

Hi Birma,

You took us to some nice trails of England again. They look so peaceful and fresh...
We have a storm and rain here at the moment and I can hear the wind howling against the windows. We never went through the sweet phases you did. It was leap into winter right after sunshine and warm days and I have no colourful dry leaves to show this year!

May I make a little suggestion about photos such as these, with the hope that I do not offend you, as I know that these are brilliant photos?
When you get to these priceless towns, sights and valleys of grand trees, please try always to shoot in wider angles or with panoramas in mind, because they'd yield excellent results. Just a tiny suggestion though, don't mean to interfere with your preferences.

I am certainly not offended. A few weeks ago I mentioned in another thread that one of the things that I like about this forum is that people actually critique the pictures and offer suggestions for improvement. I have stopped following several other forums because every photo posted on those forums receives nothing but praise, even though some of the pictures are not very good. I am under no illusion that my photography is anything other than a hobby, but I would like to do it well, and honest critique of my photos will hopefully help me to continually improve.

FWIW, I took a couple of hundred photos during my visit, and it seemed to me that the ones I posted came the closest to the theme of the challenge, which is why I chose to post them. Here are three more photos from the same trip. Hopefully the first two of these are the type of picture that you mention above.

Hi UrsaMajor,

Yes, these photos are exactly what I was I asking for in my previous post. These are lovely compositions that display the autumn colours and the surroundings in full glory.
I like your close-ups as well with all those colour and texture details, they have soul and beauty which appear as almost tangible to the vewer which we love.

I guess what I meant was: for every close-up there should also be a wide-angle consideration of the same scene. Only because the places you go to provide that richness for photography. Lovely opportunities!

Tom, I think you have to crop your shots.
E.g. in the first shot, cropping from the bottom so that the diagonal road gets out of the shot, or from the bottom and a bit from the left, so that the darker part of the water doesn't attract your view and putting the dome farther to the left of the picture.
Otherwise they are good shots.
Of course, don't think that I'm a better photographer

Thank you for your comments. I agree with them, and I have the first picture as wallpaper on my computer, cropped almost exactly as you suggested. (A very, very small amount of the footpath is showing in the bottom left corner.)

I would appreciate your opinion on cropping of the picture I have attached to this message. It was taken at a different time than the above picture of the state capitol building, and from a location about 500 meters from that photo. As is obvious, it was also taken well back from the bank of the river, which is why there is so much grass in the bottom of the image. At the time I took the shot, my thought was to contrast the green of the grass with the colors of the trees and bushes on the other side of the valley, even though the trees had at least another 7-10 days before they would reach their peak color. Now I am debating with myself whether or not the image works better if I crop all or almost all of the grass from the bottom of the image. What is your opinion?

I think you've succeeded in achieving what you were after. A good composition and the contrast between the foliage colours of the woods and the green of the grass is working for me.

Tom, I think it works fine. You have the shot divided horizontally to 3 equal parts: sky, trees and grass. This shot is beautiful.
