NEX based video camera

"With Sony promising a similar device based on the new NEX format it could well be that the days of the video DSLR are numbered. Not because of their image quality (which is remarkably good – with cinema style DOF), but because they are really such lousy video devices. Panasonic's AG-AF100 looks like it plans on bridging that gap. I can't wait."

Yeah, sounds good to me. The ergonomics of DSLR video cameras is terrible. I posted something about that a long time ago on that other forum and was attacked. Surprise, right. :) Anyway, I don't care one way or the other if video is added to a DSLR as long as it isn't detrimental to the still photo part of the camera. I suspect that for those who really care about video they will end up using cameras designed to be video cameras (which probably will also take still photos) and people who care about still photos will end up using still photo cameras (which probably will also take video).

Apparently, Sony will present the NEX video camera "very soon" (Withing a week?) and the 18-200 will be (likely) the kit lens for it.
I hope more accessories will show up soon.
But I specially hope accessories like the LAEA1 or the fisheye hit the shelves VERY soon...

I guess we can start guessing the specs for the A700 replacement now.

Well, it arrived a day earlier than the next UK press event:

I was expecting news of this (or something at least) tomorrow morning not today.

So they made a Nex camcorder without ability to record raw stills, but its video is hopefully much better than with the Nex still cams.
And the Nex still cams can do a rather basic video that can be good only under some very limited conditions.

So for a full still&motion capture system one needs both still and video bodies and then some shared lenses.

Altogether, the complete Nex system of two dedicated bodies seems to make a lot of sense. If the video body had raw stills capture and at the same time the still body had more video controls, then some buyers would be tempted to stay with only one kind of body getting suboptimal ergonomics for the non-basic (still or video, respectively) function with that body...

Makes every bit of sense to me... with only one exception - they have decided it for me... But then again, it's just me...

I thought this was an interesting take on it:

The author would be right only if all the buyers of those cams were like him (like me and/or like you, etc). But most 'regular customers' need that some/most tech decisions are made for them...

Agorabasta: I feel some contradictions between both text of you quoted here...

I am not really into video but that NEX-VG10 E-mount HD camcorder seems awesome to me. I am sure the Canon and Panasonic managements are "huddling together" somewhere to deside what to do about this.
If you already have purchased the NEX5 with 16 and 18-55mm E lenses and keen on both still and video it seems to me that purchasing this wonder with the 18-200mm would complete what is required and the still requirements can be found in a little "NEX5 thing" fitting into a small pocket somewhere. With this video I am certain that Sony will bring out more E lenses and just think about the number of extra adapters we will see from third parties as the sales of this video takes off. I wonder if ever a solution will be found to make non E lenses (with motors) AF through an appropriate adapter.

There's no contradiction at all, as long as it's OK with you that I don't consider myself nor most other posters here as 'regular customers'.

Yet I feel mostly the same as that guy does, and at the same time I think that keeping the distance between still and video devices and between the consumer and pro video devices makes very good sense for both the manufacturer and the customer as well.

I have just read that comment: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=35795166 and I must agree with his whole thinking. Many companies have gone to the wall because they did not "destruct" their own products with a new and better one, because they did not want to spoil the "cash cow". I can think of Adobe as well as many other companies. You cannot remove CA in Elements as it uses a truncated version of ACR. You do not have levels and other features in LR. They have lower priced products for photographers, but they are of limited use unless you also splash out for PS. I suppose you could combine LR and Elements and thus avoid PS. Adobe are still going strong as Corel and others have not been able to catch up with cheaper products equally capable.
As stated above if you buy NEX5 as well as NEX-VG10 you have common lenses and adapters and get RAW. I look forward to reading users comments on the video quality and formats. DPR has a long discussion about lack of common formats and interlacing instead of progressive. There is a lot of confusion and I look forward to an expert pronouncing on what the NEX-VG10 can and cannot do. Looking at the promotional film the video quality seems to "kill" current consumer video quality. With modern digital HD televisions in so many houses I can still see a market for this product. But as the DPR commenter said Sony can find themselves in "hot water" if a competitor with less market share sees an opportunity to bring out a real "do all" killer at a competitive price.

Yes, that is the link I posted earlier in this thread.

Reichmann has a short comment on it and doesn't seem to be too happy about it so far:

he really panned the NEX too. I guess what it boils down to is this. if your the type of person who should be spending longer dollars on Pro level still camera and even longer dollars on pro level video geat Sony isn't going to let you save any money here
