E-mount 28mm f2.8 lens

Unread post by bakubo »

This might be an interesting new lens if it becomes generally available:

It would be nice if Sony came out with a 28mm or 30mm or 25mm f1.8 or f2 pancake lens. The 16mm f2.8 is good, but too wide for general use, IMO.

Hi Henry,

I think Peter Ganzel already gave you a proper answer on DPR (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=38349415)
I think it is nice to have a small pancake-like lens, but but for that price I can get any mayor brand (Pentax, Minolta, Nikon, etc) 28mm f2.8 AND it's adapter with a better optical quality, that is for me more important that just the compactness of a pancake-size lens.

Regards
Pako

Actually, he was wrong:

The dangers of reading one response and then quitting. :) By the way, my post here and there didn't ask any questions so not sure what answer you are referring to.

I have an old Tokina 28mm f2.8 in Minolta MF mount bought in 1983. Looks and feels almost just like my old Minolta 50mm f1.4. Yes, with an adapter it could be used on a NEX, but wouldn't be a pancake lens.

Still, a proper Sony E-mount 28mm or 30mm or 25mm fast pancake lens would be even better.

I "know" Peter for a while and if I will trust some one, it will be him.

28mm on APS is not my favorite focal distance, but I do agree with you. It doesn't need to be a Sony lens. Apparently, the Macro lens Sony shown as mockpu at the Photokina is a 30mm (f3.5 if you trust the rumors) and even if it is not as "pancake" as the SEL 16mm f2.8, it looks quite compact and AF and definitely better optical quality. The SAM 30mm cost US$200, not US$ 80 like the one you offer, and I expect the SEL 30mm macro will be in the same price range.

I took Pete's response there as kind of sarcastic. Of course the $80 lens isn't going to be "top shelf" or among the best, but it's only $80 freaking dollars!

And the Waterhouse stops turn out to be an advantage.

If I had a choice between the all-manual $80 lens and a Sony $200 lens, I'd try hard for the latter, I think. But for $80, you can much more easily justify trying one out.

28-30mm isn't my favorite either, but it looks like the 24mm lens to come out will be the CZ, and that's just out of my price range.
