Been looking for a decent price for Sony's RX100III and still looking. Up pops two contenders to widen my choices.
Panasonic DMC-LX100 (Seems like *X100 is popular).
Canon Powershot G7 X.
What to think of these imposters designed to snatch business from Sony's RX100III?
Well, the Pana is a let down with a 4/3 sensor and only 12.7Mp. What a waste of sensor rear estate when Sony and Canon are at 20Mp from 1" (rumoured to be the same Sony sensor. Interesting thought. Sony will sell sensors to anyone with money). Got used to 20Mp and great for cropping. Widens usefulness.
So what about the Canon? No EVF! A real turn off for me. Not even an external one. Wow. Back to the drawing board Canon.
I think I will hang on to my RX100 for a while. Sony may replicate Canon's 24-100 mm lens and come up with the rumoured sensor with more EVs than present crop next year.
Basically nothing wrong with the venerable RX100.

There seems to be a bit of a war going on in the high end compacts. It can only be good for the buyer and the industry but its getting harder to pick one out that ticks all the boxes. Every one will have different priorities but there will I feel be some brand loyalty going on as well.

I don't know specs of LX100 but Canon G7X is definetely a RX100 clone. I think its shame on Canon to replicate Sony's camera but for consumers like us its still good news since competition will like to lower the prices. RX100 is a GREAT camera but needless to say expensive too.

Lx 100 is definite a good alternative. However, inexpensive Nex cameras are my preferred compact one comparing to my RX100 mark 3.

I'm in same position. I love my RX100 but it's a bore having to wear glasses to see the LCD and even then it's not that clear. Most of the time I just point and shoot from a blurred composition on the screen. Very poor quality finish on the screen, btw. My camera has been kept in a pouch since new but the screen edges look like they've been sand-papered. Will certainly get a protector next time.

The LX100 certainly looks to be a great alternative but it's just that bit too big. For me, the whole point of these is they should be carry-anywhere, which means pocketable. So the only viable alternative for me is either the mkiii or mkiv. I've compared the EVFs on them and the mkiv is considerably better. There are other advantages in the latest model, the most important for me being the ability to set minimum shutter speed when using auto ISO. So this will be the one. However, not at £850 so I'll either wait six months and hope the price falls or buy online, where I've seen it advertised by a seemingly reputable outlet for £625.

I went round in circles trying to determine which camera to get to replace my RX100, which, like others, I loved but hated the lack of an eye-level viewfinder.
Finally, I bought a RX100/3 on eBay, hardly used, for a very acceptable price. I am now VERY happy for my 'everywhere, everyday" camera. I don't feel any need for the /4.

Like artHarris I finally resolved to end my wait. Frankly I never even looked seriously at alternatives to the RX100M3. Like Artington I found the M4 price too steep and did not need the improvements over M3. I finally purchased a new M3 from Great Western Cameras using the Sony £50 cash back.
Needless to say I am delighted with this tiny piece of kit. I love the extra lens width to 24mm and the view finder. The movable rear screen is also a welcome addition. The image quality is perhaps a little better than my M1. I will still keep my M1 but the M3 is now my trusted companion wherever I go. Habitually I shoot RAW+Jpeg. I sometimes find the Sony Jpegs "over processed" and revert to RAW using Adobe Cloud PS. This is particularly so when there is a great contrast and working on the RAW image provides more DR. I wish Adobe would provide a lens profile for the RX100M3, but in the meantime I simply use Sony E and 16-50 and it seems to be satisfactory. Anyone know about a custom RX100M3 lens profile I could import into Adobe Cloud PS RAW filter or LR Cloud?

DxO have produced a raw lens profile for the M3, but not yet for the M4
