Archiving

Unread post by Dr. Harout »

This could be a noob question for "connoisseurs", but I really would like to know and learn whether it's better to archive RAW files in their original format or convert them to DNG and then archiving them? :?: :?:

And please, do enlighten me of the benefits and losses.
Does it change anything in the EXIF or GPS data, etc.?

why do you want to convert your RAW to DNG? just keep the sidecar (and don't forget to update it every time you upgrade your PS/LR software, and also replace the ones in your backup).

DNG is an interesting way to send files to some one else (a graphic designer, a newspaper...) with all the corrections on it, so your interface only needs to export at their working color space.

My thinking is that you always want the original. Who knows that if 5 years down the road someone will be able to come up with a new algorithm that can extract a better final result out of the RAWS (look at LR4 vs 2/3)? It would be a shame if it didn't work as well on DNGs, wouldn't it? Also, you can always export to DNGs later.
