Nikon D3X on the way

Unread post by David Kilpatrick »

You'll be seeing some leaked advert copy no doubt very soon in other web pages, not here of course, do some searches for Nikon D3X and it's bound to happen tonight or over the weekend. You will also learn the price. Alpha 900 owners will be cracking open a case a champagne and dancing on the rooftops. Honest!

I have the ad copy here in time for my magazine which goes to press at the end of next week. Can't say anything until after Monday but of course, we know the score already and the most searched term for the photoclubalpha website ever since last summer has been Nikon D3X. I know the price, and the megapixel count, but I have no idea of the frame rate or any other specs.

Let's just say that Nikon will not be undercutting Sony :-)

The world is a different place now that post-crash/recession pricing is starting to appear. And you all thought DSLRs were going to keep getting cheaper!

Read Seb's price figure which he reckons it must sell below, then multiply to half as much again (150%). The ad I have here does have the same frame rate data but I can't reveal it. I guess that also means I can't read it from another source and mention it, but you can of course.

I will tell you that the ad includes the phrase 'a studio DSLR' and the whole emphasis seems to be on targeting the medium format market.

Well, we shall see how they fare. I'm writing up the Phase One P65+ which I shot a few snaps with two weeks ago, young Richard is running round California on a quick week's break from dull UK life, with a Hasselblad H3DII 31 megapixel kit, and my test Canon 5D MkII arrives tomorrow with a 24-105mm L (they are selling the camera with this as a kit lens - it is a packaged kit) and a 50mm f1.4 or f1.8 II lens because I insisted they must NOT just send me it with the 24-105mm. Canon's PR did not really believe me when I said the 24-105mm already had a reputation for falling short on the 1Ds MkIII and most of my professional Canon user readers work with the 24-70mm f2.8 instead. But, they have no 24-70mm f2.8s around.

Ouch! I didn't expect it to be cheap, but wow, that is a lot higher than I was thinking.
Not that I can afford either..but hey, you never know..
Really makes the A900 look very affordable!

Don't know what to say, but as a former Nikonist I am always glad to hear their good news and progress. I am glad also that Sony is taking great and trusty steps forward.
And oh how happy I would be if they just kick Canon...

Do you know something with regards to new Sony pricing for the A900, lenses, etc.?

Until we see the full effects of the global financial/economic mess I am holding off spending lots of money on things I don't need. The industrialized world has much better social safety nets than it did back in the 1930s and in the U.S. the government is not doing the things that were done back then that made the mess worse. Of course, no one knows yet if the different things that are being done now will result in a much better outcome, worse outcome, or not much different. :) Although I am reasonably financially secure I can't help but look on in wonder (and even a bit of horror :) ) at how cavalierly some hobbyists, who can barely even afford it now much less if the situation gets worse, are spending big money on things such as an A900 and expensive lenses. Oh, just to be clear, this is not directed at you David. :) Certainly, I hope it all turns out to be a short term hiccup, but right now there are just too many unknowns. The Great Depression got kicked off with the stock market crash of 1929, but it wasn't until about 1932 that the full effects were being felt. Here is a column by Tom Friedman (Pulitzer Prize winner) in the New York Times a few days ago:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/23/opini ... man&st=cse
So, I have a confession and a suggestion. The confession: I go into restaurants these days, look around at the tables often still crowded with young people, and I have this urge to go from table to table and say: “You don’t know me, but I have to tell you that you shouldn’t be here. You should be saving your money. You should be home eating tuna fish. This financial crisis is so far from over. We are just at the end of the beginning. Please, wrap up that steak in a doggy bag and go home.”
Anyway, I don't mean to throw a wet blanket on the enthusiasm for the A900, new D3x, etc. :) I love it too. :)

David you mentioned that you were expecting the Canon 5D 11 for review. I am going to be interested in the reactions of reviewers to this camera.

Based on a casual conversation at a local fast food franchise with the only Canon 5D user that I know ( non pro as well ), the new camera is not what he was expecting. Although Canon and Nikon rarely go spec for spec he was expecting something more like a Canon take of the Nikon 700 with perhaps a modest pixel boost.

Not a large sampling of opinion I know, but he does have a point in what is Canon trying to achieve with this camera ?

I really like this one of Donald Rumsfeld's,

"There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know.
There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know.
But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.
Donald Rumsfeld"

As far as the prices of cameras go here, the only difference so far that I can see is the price of an A700 has gone up at Sony Style by about $200 in the last couple of months all the rest look pretty much the same despite the $AU going from US 90c down to about 65c, so it will be interesting to see what the price of the D3x will be here, my guess is it will be similar to the hi-res 1D MkIII ie. around $10000-$12000.
You have too admire optimists, who would build expensive cameras right now? when there will potentially be few customers for them....unless their customers are eternal optimists as well, and/or have plenty of money.

The big question is, Is President Elect. Sen. Obama going to save us all?
One does have to wonder about someone willingly applying for that job...at the moment.
I reckon the situation is something like this, "Mr President the world's economy is on the edge of an abyss, however we do have a tightrope accross too the other side, only thing is, we're not sure how strong the rope is, or how strong it even needs to be...there is a good chance it will break, also we can't see the bottom so we don't know if there is any safety net, there is a better than even chance there isn't one"

I can't judge anything with expertise. My main employer has a residence in Bali and was considering a permanent move within 2 years. He had about $4000 in cash before leaving Bali this week, and the local bank offered him 9% interest. He decided to keep the cash as cash. His contacts in Singapore and Bali let him know that putting $4000 in at 9% was not worth much if the $4000 turned into $0 recoverable funds. He says that what's hitting UK/US/Europe now his just about to hit SE Asia with a vengeance - big time.

I moved all my funds from business to personal accounts a month ago because the UK gov protects personal accounts, not business accounts. Even so, it is of no importance. Everything is a gamble. If I keep my (relatively small) mortgage and the pound ends up being devalued - likely outcome within the next six months - then my debt is reduced in real terms. But my bank funds are also reduced. If I had to suggest any course of action within the next 4 weeks, it would be: either transfer liquid funds into gold/art, or buy what you want to own - car, TV, homeimprovement, whatever (in the UK). I am 100% happy with having an A900. I think I may buy a Sony KDL40V4000 TV this weekend, while it's still cheap and my pound is worth what it is. I'm also considering new car on terms - four years from now, the 'balloon' payment may seem trivial on the currently offered deals.

The left wing yo-yo's *forced* major banks and mortgage companies to make bad loans to people that could not afford them, and now we are paying the price for that very bad policy. FYI, Obama is one of the least qualified men ever to be elected to the high office of president...give me a break!

Obama sold the country on 95% of us will get a tax cut and a bunch of other lies....it's to bad 40% of Americans don't pay any taxes in the first place. He confuses words like "welfare" and "tax cuts" to confuse Americans for his own personal political gain.

I live about an hour from Obama's home in Chicago and have followed Obama for many, many years. He hooked in with the criminal Tony Rezko and the terrorist William Ayers early, mainstays of the corrupt Chicago political machine. The guy wants to rob from the rich and give to the poor. If you want to talk about the *socialist* Obama make a thread in open talk...I certainly don't want to hear it here.

The thing is, it's what he does and what the US economy does in response that will have a direct/indirect impact on the price of our photographic equipment, or even if there will be any photographic equipment...down the line, it could get to the stage of photography being well down the priority list...survival could become more important, if things really go pear shaped.

The only advice I can think of is be careful with he gov insurance. there might be a max across all accounts rather than an amount for each failed account.

The economy here is still showing small percentages of growth, for now. but we have a conservative government now that was just elected in its second minority (actually politics here is getting fun to watch here nowadays) and typically they spend and run deficits (contrary to belief) which I guess there saying now that they are posting a deficit in the new budget. but even with the US companies closing up and the collateral damages thats cause we still are in pretty good shape.

everyone I know with means in in the US on a shopping spree. The government isn't stopping it either down there. even the banks and pretty good sized corporations that normally would be subject to months of oversight are just changing hands like crazy with nothing but a nod from the government.. I hope it stops because we don;t want a neighbor that comes to the realization that they Chinese owned one day.

I know there a golf course in AZ now thats all the homes were bought up by Canadians (we like warm and dry.. which I could afford one myself).. US brokers are starting to advertise here and governments both state and federal are offering incentives. it's also really strange because the US media isn't really talking about it... Lots off odd things happening down there these days.

Nikon and Canon offer such an extensive range of lenses and accessories that Sony/Maxxum is not a viable or preferable option for many photographers. If you need a 24PC lens or a 800mm telephoto you don't care if the A900 is half the price of a Niknon D3x, it simply will not do.
Thus N & C enjoy greater flexibility in pricing their wares. Of course, how they will maintain pricing given current economic conditions remains to be seen.

There is always the possibility that the world could be "overstocked" with electronic goods for a while soon, we could be heading into a period of great bargains, so one might be able to aquire a reasonable cheap D3x in the not too distant future. (if you wanted/needed one that is).

So why throw oil on the fire by posting about "Flaming liberals ''" earlier in this thread? IME, these OT sub-threads die out very quickly on their own.

BTW, who appointed you moderator, editor or censor on this board?
