Hi all,
I'm after a new lens hood. The standard lens hood I got with my SAL1870 cracked.
I see in the market there are different shapes of lens hoods:
* the standard flat tubular/ring shape
* the petal shaped hood
* and even rubber lens hoods with the standard flat shape
What are the pros/cons of the different shaped hoods? I've only used the flat type hood in the past and would be greatful for your thoughts/experiences.
thanks in advance
cheers
alex

Re: Lens hood shape
I had thought I lost the lens hood for mine but found it later. I tried a few generic hoods on that lens and what you have to watch out for is that it's bigger in diameter otherwise you will see it at the wide end. to be honest I don;t think the original hood did very much for that lens anyway.

Re: Lens hood shape
Because the 18-70mm front rim rotates, petal hoods are not an option. You must either use the original, or a similarly minimal hood.

Re: Lens hood shape
Thanks for all your info and suggestions.
I also found out about a site that has free pdf templates that you can print out and make your own lens hood for those on a budget - like myself.
check it out at http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or http://www.lenshoods.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I got these courtesy of Abazz, a member of the MF Lenses forum at http://forum.mflenses.com/lens-hood-sha ... tml#119248" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I think I might try these out and see if I can perhaps modify the design to take into account of the rotating front rim of my lens.
I'll let you know how things turn out.
Let me know if anything else comes to mind...
cheers
