knowing when to say when

No, not a drinking thread, those go elsewhere :)
On this forum and others, I bump into threads that make me want to rant. Mostly these are rumour threads, where anyone's dreams can be passed on with vague attribution, or worse yet two threads/sites can feed each other. Whoever posted the 'official sony a800' rumour last week must be on the floor laughing from the traction it's picked up in a dozen websites - more like a virus than a photo topic. On the one hand I want to scream with my keyboard.. on the other hand, doing so will keep the thread high on the recent-post list, and what I really want is for the thread to fade away. I therefore steer clear of those traps as best I can & scream silently to myself.. and I encourage others to do the same. It's not easy, certainly, but I do my best.

Let's all go take some pictures & enjoy the real gear that we have!
It snowed on my birthday for the 2nd time in my memory here in Portland; that's what happens when you live at 50' in the NW USA.. even if it is late January!

Good catch! :) A few days ago when the dude wearing the red thong swimming suit came walking toward me I was talking with my wife as we walked along and didn't have my camera ready. Fortunately, I got one shot before he got too far away. Actually, I am not sure I really want a photo of his pouch out front. :)

Now, for just the opposite, here are a bunch of young Japanese guys on the beach a few days ago. Not the typical Waikiki beach wear. :) They had a photographer with them (he is on the left) and I think they were probably a Japanese boy musical group and they were having photos made -- maybe for a magazine or album cover or whatever.

You should take this kind of picture with a lens with six aperture blades.

Quite true -- but 7 or 9 is all I have. I figured this is why snow is so rare here, it's tough to make snow w/seven points!

Henry wins. People versus icicles, people win.

All we have on our beaches here in Scotland is a load of wetsuited masochist surfers trying to beat the North Sea at -1C (river frozen, sea still liquid, human being just plain nuts!).

We have a local Polar Bear club here that skinny dips in the Mississippi River every New Years Day. They're not really happy unless the river is choked with ice!

As you said - nuts!

My wife said "when" when I began to upload this one a while back. She doesn't mind that I would take pictures of strangers, or even pretty ladies, but that it might invade their privacy to upload their picture. I would think it was flattering. This one was also shot this winter, though (the scarf if purely ornamental in this instance) it doesn't get that cold down here.

As you might guess since I like people/street photography, this is something I have thought about for quite a few years. It is up to each photographer what kind of photos they like to take and then what they do with them. In my case, here are a few things that I have considered.

1. Famous, aclaimed, revered photographers of the past such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and many others took photos of people and they were published. Here in the States we used to have Life magazine, sadly gone, and it was full of photos of people, often on the street or candids. There are many, many world-famous photos that are candids of people out in public. You don't need a model release for editorial use here in the States.

2. I also take many candid photos of people when I travel. It is the people I generally find the most interesting. Take a look at National Geographic magazine. I sort of aspire to that sort of photojournalistic type of travel photography.

3. I generally don't take photos of people in genuinely embarrassing moments. When people are in public where they can be seen by anyone then there isn't a whole lot of expectation of privacy. Having said that, I am definitely not one of those photographers who can be real jerks and obnoxious about the way they photograph people. They can get some very interesting photos when they crowd a person and stick a lens right in their face to get a reaction, but I just can't do that. Sometime I interact with people, but sometimes not. The result is two different types of photos and both can be good. I just like to be around people and watch the amazing interactions, facial expressions, and people living their lives. Waikiki is a great place for people photography because it is always full of people, locals and tourists, and almost all the tourists have cameras so it is easy to take photos and most people don't notice or care.

In a public place it isn't clear to me how much privacy one can expect. As a matter of fact, at the beach most people probably don't expect much privacy at all. Take a look at the photo I posted above of the older gentleman wearing the red thong swimming suit who was strutting along the beach. Something told me that not only was he not expecting privacy, he was begging for attention. :) The same is true of a woman who has gone to the trouble to get D or DD size artificial breasts implanted and then wears a tiny bikini on the beach. There is just a chance she might want people to see her. :)

I have recently added many more new people photos to the Hawaii folder on my website:

Except for sales for commercial (non-editorial) use, US Courts have generally upheld the right to take and publish photos taken where people don't have "a reasonable expectation of privacy". In other words, if you aren't invading their private property, or putting cameras in bathrooms, thru bedroom windows, etc., you're in the clear.

Yes, at least here in the States, a model release is not needed editorial use. I have read about these many times in various places. Of course, if you want to sell your photos then it limits their usage. Just a few days ago I read it again here;

A week or two ago in the Honolulu newspaper there was a story and a photo about surfers on one of the North American Great Lakes in winter. They were wearing thick wetsuits, hoods, gloves, and boots. It said they smear Vaseline on their face (the only exposed skin) to keep it from freezing. The photo was a guy with his surfboard heading into the water and there was ice and snow all around. Sure looked cold. :)
