The first one has a really dreamy atmosphere - great. I might even try to crop it in a more panoramic way, removing quite a bit of the lower part, just avoiding to center the horizon. This one must look great in larger format on the wall.
The first is as though an alien land, out of planet Earth...untouched and silvery in its motionless idle scenery. The other has bearings of life forms and movement; the moss and the water flow.
I love Scottish land and waterscapes...and castles of course!
I like them both, and I think that the first works both cropped and uncropped. Cropped gives it that panoramic look, but uncropped give it that feel of being on the water and needing to cross it.

Gosh, thanks for such encouraging comments guys - I really appreciate it! I think these are amongst the best pictures I've taken in eighteen months of Alpha ownership, but still I was lucky with the second one. I keep noticing little things in it that work together which I wasn't aware of when taking it!

There's a lot more to DSLRs than there ever were to film SLRs. We also get to do a ton of 'darkroom' things in software, and see immediate results. Keep working with it, and keep posting great photos.
