Short Cumbrian Trip

Thought I'd share a few pics from a trip to Cumbria this week,

First we took a tour of the disused mineral mine at Nenthead (lead, silver, zinc and numerous other minerals had been mined here over a period of several hundred years and there is a good network of tunnels to walk. This is a waterfall at the exit - the broken pipe in the pool was once used to pass fresh air from one mine hill to another.



Next a much photographed boathouse at the head of Ullswater



Finally for this set, Aira force, a national trust property along the north shore of Ullswater



I wanted to get some high up views looking down the valleys, but due to low cloud, visibility up high was very poor

See my new website, set up on Thursday (four hours wasted, along with $214 for three years, but I feel VERY strongly about the lousy attitude of the English NT - not shared by the Scottish NT, because Scottish law almost prevents them taking this tack).

Great work on the website David, it deserves to be a success. I have a few pictures on Alamy, and just about a dozen taken around National Trust properties, most of which are of flower beds, and recieved the Alamy email telling me that they'll be deleted in 12 days time. As a Trust life member, to say I was annoyed that a picture of a flower taken in a Trust garden was perceived as a breach of presumed copyright would be an underdstatment as I've always been careful not to include buildings etc. I might not be quite so careful in future, but will be more careful in my keywording!!!

As I'm not posting the pics for financial reward, only to share some images I don't think I'll upset 'the man'

I don't know why they couldn't come to some arrangement with a percentage of the fee paid for pics taken on NT property going to the NT, or sell commercial licences at properties. At present I'm more concerned with the rights grab for entering competitions - sign away all rights and allow them to use the images commercially (include editing) in perpetuity - double standards or what!

I find the uphill shot of Aira Force very attractive. Becomes more attractive for belonging to the National Trust because it is prohibited to
photographers in general.

Ah, just as I was posting the above lines your new photos arrived. Very nice both but the hills fading within different thickness of clouds/mist is really sweet while the first is generously offering more depth of the actual natural environments..

Do you know when the cut off date was? The BJP article indicates that this does not apply to photographs taken before the policy was introduced. I take it the only legal grounds they have is if you paid for a ticket (and entered into a contract) that prohibited commercial use of any photographs.

I was only joking really about the NT, but you never know what approach they will take. They might consider this website commercial, and therefore anything appearing on it to be commercial. From the latest Alamy user group discussions, it seems that NT can not enforce things easily if you have not paid for admission - but they will still try if they can. And their own competition website is now attracting a lot of criticism for the apparently total double standard being operated by the Trust.

Although I have been a member all my life (changing to the Scottish trust when we moved 20 years ago), and although I have worked with them officially, I don't like them at all.

We had dealings with them commercially in the East Midlands, creating their first film sales through Trust shops, their first regional photographic competition, arranging Minolta cameras for staff at a discount, devised an archival processing system for records of artefacts and property. They ultimately treated me badly, took everything I had started to national level but dropped my company's involvement. I also once came up against their property rental dept, which at that time dismissed any prospective tenant who was not a retired military, police, church, academic or government person. I grew up (at least until I was 15) in the prep/public school system where my father's background as a top national industry chief was very much derided by a certain class, and I'm afraid to say that particular class dominated the Trust. I guess they arrived with William the Conqueror, and find it very easy to treat the rest of the world - especially anyone trying to earn a few pounds from pictures - as the peasantry.

The current writing of rules about photography is entirely in character!

Nice shots Murph. I particularly like the bridge/waterfall shot, and the rocks on the lake shore. It doesn't look like the sun has been out much up there?

I heartily agree with others' comments regarding organisations such as the NT. I don't see how they deserve their charitable status, and I personally avoid them like the plague. As David has said, the situation seems to be much better in Scotland. There is much better access there, as well as far fewer fences, rules, and admission charges. There are exceptions in England, and I include the Wildlife Trusts in this who seem to provide access to more interesting places, with voluntary (if any) donations being the only price of admission.
