I just got a nice copy of this lens from the guy I bought my A700 and 200mm/F2.8 APO from. It was a lucky break, and I got it for the equivalent of about US$570. Happy as a lark! I'm going out tomorrow night to try this out on my regular weekend night visits to the performances at the theatre.

Re: Minolta 100mm f/2
Thanks! I've been hit by a serious case of Lens Lust! Beside these, I've got the 85/1.4, 100/2.8, 135/2.8 & 28-135/4-4.5, just to name a few I'm looking for a cure to this dreaded disease...

There is no cure for lens lust. However there is a temporary and treatable solution to this illness. Just buy one lens every time symptoms reoccur.

Re: Minolta 100mm f/2
in order to reduce the ansiety, just think this way: this lens cost 3 times the price of the 135 f2.8 and twice the price (used market) of the 100 f2.8 macro. it is 3 times better than the 135 f2.8 and 2 times better than the 100 macro? I don't think so.AJ Gressette wrote:There is no cure for lens lust. However there is a temporary and treatable solution to this illness. Just buy one lens every time symptoms reoccur.
in any case, if you have 800 us$ and you want to offer you the lens: go for it!

Re: Minolta 100mm f/2
You can buy the 100 f/2 for about 900US on average. Until you have used this lens extensively at the film plane and in digital, I don't think you can appreciate its full potential. Its still the sharpest Prime Lens Minolta made at "f/2". Then again sharpness does not always delegate price. If you were in the market for one of the 400~500 manufactured 85 f/1.4 G(D) LE or Limited you would pay 3,000.00-4500.00US. Nostalgia plays a roll at times.

Take a look at this:
http://cnqo.phys.strath.ac.uk/~daniel/P ... ermere.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Zoom in and look round. If Daniel Oi likes the 100mm f/2 you can be sure it's a very good lens indeed.

Re: Minolta 100mm f/2
There was a post on DPR with a new user asking if he should buy this cragslist ad. it was a max 9 with this 85mm limited lens attached for 750.00.. I respoded early with a jump on it right away recommendation but he found out the seller had gotten such a huge response he decided not to sell it. The good minolta lenses are getting very very rare now. I used to see them quite a bit in the used cabinets at stores but not nowadays.... might try some yard sales now

matsuiyastore , I have bought 4 lenses from there (28-70G, 85mm D, 200mm 2.8 HS and non HS) and never had problem and even I don't know how, but he was able to make me save border taxes ...
Usually if the description says Excellent, you can expect to have something that you are not able to see the difference between one new.

Re: Minolta 100mm f/2
This statement is good for collectors, but I think it doesn't applies to all photographers. Now you can find a Vivitar Serie 1 85mm f1.4 for US$ 375 (REF: http://www.adorama.com/VV8514SO.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and I'm ready to bet that you won't find any mayor difference between this lens and your 4500 US$ LE version. In other words, the Vivitar will do the job.AJ Gressette wrote:You can buy the 100 f/2 for about 900US on average. Re: Minolta 100mm f/2
One small difference - the Samyang/Vivitar is manual focus and has no chip, therefore offers no focus confirmation and no SSS control...

I was talking about price/optical quality.David Kilpatrick wrote:One small difference - the Samyang/Vivitar is manual focus and has no chip, therefore offers no focus confirmation and no SSS control...

manual focus isn't a huge issue (nor the Minoltas or the Zeiss focus fast enough for considere it fopr sport photography) but if you add no focus confirmation and no SSS... I'll go for a 135 2.8 or a 100 macro (second hand market) for that price and I'm still doing the job for 300US$ and I can keep the other 4200 US$ for the holidays or the kid's college fund.
I'm not a collector and I consider I have too much equipment already. I dont GAS anymore.

Now for someone who would really like one of these this one might come at a reasonable price
