that could be I suppose. I think it would be a horrible decision for them to go that way though. Switches have long lives normally but now were talking about a switch that also fors a supporting structure on the grip. the old sensors had no moving parts. the shutter button on my X700 was a precursor to that. there was a centre pin surrounded by plastic with a metal outer ring and your finger made a circuit between the centre and outer ring through your finger to light up the VF display.

Of course it could be something completely different, it could sense heat, or it might sense light being blocked, or it might be a different alloy to regulation 316, or it might just be as Barry says, a decoration, all will be revealed in due course I guess, and yeah I still have my two X700's along with the motor drive (has portrait and landscape buttons), and those conductive switches all still work flawlessly...and I think that button/switch style actually made it's debute on the XG-1....hah those were the days, led VF display, processor for the P mode, A mode, exposure metering all running for ages off a couple of little button cells....ain't nostalgia wonderful.

I rather like the white bodies..I think they look unique and tasty. Not too keen on silver (ok for the film ones), and everything else is hmmm.
That copper brown is a bit different, not sure I would want to be seen out with it though

It's great to know that you no longer need to understand what all those buttons and dials do. All you have to do is randomly push buttons and spin dials until the mountains on the display achieve the desired level of blurriness! I'm buying one of these so I no longer have to get up early in the morning to get good lighting. Attached is an artistic conception of using the blurry mountain technique to achieve good pictures.

P.S. The MERAKOH review is even more entertaining if you imagine it being read with the voice over from the "Iron Chef."

Does Sony Australia's attitude really surprise anyone ?

Back when Kayell had the Minolta agency it was all high prices with a bad attitude and if you wanted certain accessories that they hadn't bother to stock ?

You had to really want to be into Minolta, at least with the internet it made ordering stuff in from America a lot easier.

I would hazard a guess that it's because DSLR sales in Australia have tanked since the Oz kopek went on the skids, (and the Yen went into orbit), so no great rush on that front as far as Sony is concerned, I would say.
