These are very sharp and good shots.
Can you give an estimate of the distance between the lens and the aircrafts? Did you use a tele-converter?

Thanks,
Yildiz
No converter used and I don't really see me trying although I have both a 1.4x Sigma and 2x Teleplus.

All were cropped very slightly (rear view the most as I didn't zoom in enough!!) on an A700.
Nimrod was 250mm, ISO100, 1/500, f9
Tornado rear view was 230mm, ISO200, 1/500, f7.1
Tornado front view was 400mm, ISO200, 1/640, f7.1

I've been waiting for this lens for a very long time as it is ideally suited to aviation photography as Heidfirst will no doubt testify.
Many guys use the C100-400 or N80-400 lenses or Sigma 50-500 etc but I hung on to get this one and I am not dissapointed.
I might need to get a slightly bigger bag now though.

Cheers,
Mike

absolutely, as far as I'm concerned it's pretty much perfect for my needs.
Only (minor) gripes other than those already mentioned would be I would have preferred another focus limit setting (user settable would have been ideal but say 10m or 20m to infinity), never say no to even faster focus & a constant F4 would have been the cat's pyjamas but then it would have been bigger, heavier & dearer.
As it is it's easily best in class imo.
Got absolutely no qualms about having bought it.

A700+VG+70-400mm fits in a Lowepro Toploader 75AW & with an attached lens pouch I can keep a 16-105/28-75mm etc. handy as well.

Kurt Munger has his review up

Synopsis "The Sony 70-400mm F/4-5.6 is an all-around winner and worthy of the fairly hefty price tag. If you have the cash, get this lens! "

It's a thorough report, but the illustrations are very disappointing. He must have a decentered example of the 500mm f/8 (the images indicate this, the aberration is not symmetrical) and his 70-300mm G is not focusing well. All the 100% samples are excessivelty compressed withjith JPEG artifacts more visible that real detail.

Here - not even a test shot - is a 100% clip from a shot I took today with the Sigma 70-200mm at 200mm, f/7.1 - this clip is about 2/3rds out towards the corner- from raw, zero sharpening at capture, no sharpening otherwise, and it's at ISO 320 on the A900 as well:

These are Adobe CS4 Save for Web High Quality processed which should be the worst standard you can possibly accept for example pix.

Hey I am new here. I have a a700 + vertical grip as well as the SAL 16-105 lens.
i just recently (yesterday) got the 70-400mm G lens. I have yet to try it but its my first G lens and I hope to get the most out of it. the one thing i did notice is that it is very heavy and the SSM is so silent i thought it was broken
I just have a question. Did anyone who has this lens see the problems with the "Harsh" Bokeh that some people were concerned with at 400mm? I have yet to got out and try this lens to its full potential (its been rainy at my place for 2 days now) :( and i was just wondering if other people were experiencing this problem or was it just a nit picky thing they picked out in the review?
Anyhow I hope to get great pictures with this just like the ones i saw here of the planes

It turned out the lens I used for the review at the beginning of this thread was faulty. The fall-off of sharpness at 70 mm was significantly uneven across the frame. The lower left corner always was worse then the rest of the frame; it almost looked like motion blur. I suspect bad centering and, as a consequence, severe astigmatism. So I sent it back for a replacement, and the new copy has arrived last week.

The new copy indeed is better than the first one. The sharpness across the frame, at all focal lengths, still isn't perfect but it's much better now. I guess it's next to impossible to align 18 elements perfectly in a zoom lens (unless you want to pay Leica prices), and the residual unevenness I can easily live with. It takes very close inspection and a trick to notice. To check a lens for symmetry, take a test shot from atop a tripod, then rotate the lens by 180° in the tripod collar and take another shot of the same subject. Rotate the upside-down image back to normal and compare at 200 % view.

What surprises me most is the difference in vignetting and distortion between the two copies. The new copy basically has the same flaws as the first one, but to a lesser degree. The vignetting at 70 mm and full aperture is still there but maybe half as bad as it was in the first copy. The same is true for the distortion: virtually absent at 70 mm, pincushion-shaped at all other settings---but significantly weaker than in the first copy. The distortion at 200 - 400 mm used to be fairly strong and possibly a problem in critical shots such as architecture; now it's pretty low and hardly a problem even with critial subjects.

Despite the flaws, I rated the first copy the best telephoto zoom lens I ever used. The second copy now is even better. I think even central sharpness, being very good to begin with, has improved ... but that's hard to tell precisely because I don't have the first copy anymore.

There is a comparison between the Minolta AF Apo HS 400 mm 1:4.5 G lens and the SAL-70400G at dyxum.com. I agree with their final verdict: the AF Apo 400 G still is the better performer at 400 mm but the difference between the two is very small. Being a zoom, the SAL-70400G is just excellent.
