A metaphor seen by chance

Unread post by David Kilpatrick »

On my way to take video and stills of the high water (we do not have disastrous flooding here in Kelso, the town was planned long ago to allow for the river to rise and only two or three modern houses are anyway near the high water mark) I passed the war memorial. I was using the Alpha 550 and Sigma 18-250mm, and this makes a great combination.

The poppy crosses were in disarray, the rain had been so heavy, many of the poppies had been soaked and fallen off. I walked round the other side of the cluster of crosses, and this is what I saw:

The black dots made by the pins for the paper poppies looked like bullet holes, the crosses somehow look human, and the red dye from the poppies had bled through the back of them. Along with the reflected sunlight from the red lighting up the back it seemed to say something more than the regular front view of rows of new crosses on November 11th.

Quite a shot.

Must be more effective to see them in real while walking past them...

'Every flower has a thorn', to be spotted and to bring hurt, only when the circumstances arise or coincide...I guess.

Maybe a good caption for it could be 'Futility', it is quite an amazing real life metaphore when you think about it, I bet the one's responsible for it hadn't forseen how it would turn out after some heavy rain.

I saw your photo this morning and haven't been able to get it out of my mind. Very powerful...

"And still the dark stain spreads between their shoulder blades
A mute reminder of the poppy fields and graves
And when the fight was over
We spent what they had made..."

Thanks for sharing.. John
