I'd like to know what this ship is used for, looks quite unusual to me.



And the 'King of Scandinavia' coming into the Tyne..

Well, the odd ship says 'Inspector' on it and that would suggest it's a survey ship. Used for offshore oil, mapping the seabed to position rigs and pipelines. And for harbours and other maritime engineering work. The winch and tower at the stern fit in with that. It probably has a tethered submersible, certainly lots of sonar and other kit. Another one of the many 'support vessels'.

I agree with stewartjs that ships and the sea make great subjects. I like the examples above, especially HMS Warrior. I visited her when she was in London, I think, when I was young. Here is one, a bit more modest in size than the leviathans above, but a working vessel none the less.



I have a weakness for the Cal Mac fleet. This one was taken a couple of years ago, on a rare sunny day in August , on the Isle of Mull. A100 with 18-70 kit.

The Skandi Inspector is a wellhead maintenance vessel, also used for specialised research. The structure above the bridge is a helicopter landing pad! Her and vessels like her are really multipurpose ships, often contracted for specific duties, more often connected with north sea oil and gas production (for the Uk anyway).

The Skandi Inspector is a wellhead maintenance vessel, also used for specialised research. The structure above the bridge is a helicopter landing pad! Her and vessels like her are really multipurpose ships, often contracted for specific duties, more often connected with north sea oil and gas production (for the Uk anyway).

I figured that was a landing pad, there will be a few stories to tell about that over the life of the ship I reckon.

Heres the MV Bauhinia passing the pierhead at Liverpool on the River Mersey. You can just see the bow of the Royal Navy carrier HMS Illustrious on the liner berth. The tanker was the first VLCC (very large crude carrier) to visit the Mersey for many years, several more were to come last year. VLCC`s have tonnage approaching 300,0000GT when fully laden, the RN carrier is just over 20.000GT by comparison. The Bauhinia is leaving in "ballast" having just unloaded nearly 80.000 tons of crude at the Tranmere oil terminal in less than 24 hours!



Smit tug Barbados, seen here battling the swell while swinging the RN carrier HMS Illustrious for berthing at the pierhead Liverpool last year. Always great to watch the tugs at work.
