Popped out today for a stroll along the Rutland water cycle/footpath (17 miles round trip - I did just a couple) and fired off a few waterscapes.
This is one of them - Normanton Church
which is all that remains of the settlement before Rutland Water was created by flooding the area to create the reservoir.
alpha 700 + Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 (reduction for websize has not done it justice, but you get the idea I hope)
Thats a very nice shot and you could do a lot with a scene like that but I'll bet it looks great printed out too.. I saw some HDR treatments recently that would look fantastic and surreal on that scene. and something else called I think tone mapping. I'd want to go back and shoot the scene with all different skies in the back you could almost pick the mood and the scene would work
Absolutely agree with Javelin, this composition screams for some tonemapping!! Especially the cloudy sky could turn very dramatic.
Very nice composition. I really start to enjoy super wide angle photography.

If I got it right, tonemapping includes every technique to "use" multiple exposures in order to create a certain effect. Mostly it is used for improving the dynamic range, for instance to "retrieve" blown out areas..
In this case I actually referred to creating a HDR picture. Not so much for retrieving any lost information, but more to create a surrealistic effect, which often goes with the creation of HDRs. I suppose there are people on this forum who know much more about this than me... so pardon me for being a bit vague.
I would like to play around a bit with your picture, but I will need the RAW file for that... Can you post it somewhere to download? With the Jpeg you can hardly retrieve anything lost, so no big use there. I am not a specialist, so I cannot guarantee anything decent.

Gulp. I only used fine jpeg for this set. (I don't use RAW unless I'm really on a mission as my skills just aren't good enough to make much difference, both in the photography or in PS).
That's what I have been doing until one year ago... But I can guarantee you that once you got the basic skills, you will never shoot Jpeg only any more.
The difference is huge and once you get a certain routine, I am sure you will enjoy trying to get the very best out of your picture.
For the beginning shoot Jpeg+Raw. First you can always use the Jpeg, second you have a picture to refer to when you convert... I learned a lot by trying to do as well as the KM7D Jpeg-engine... then again you need a lot of memory... The 16GB are expensive, that's true.
