Weather in Istanbul: Fog gone; Visibility good enough to catch the glimpse of a black submarine in the waters of the Bosphorus.

Monday Night
Chance of Rain. Scattered Clouds. Low: 17 °C . Wind North 32 km/h . 30% chance of precipitation (water equivalent of 0.55 mm).

Most of fog gone, leaving a little haze behind, later in the day I saw a black submarine and a vintage yatcht that is a century old.

Two contrasting and beautiful scenes Yildiz .

I like that yacht. A truly grand way to sail. Great to have the sub, yacht and bulk carrier all in the same shot.

The sub looks like it's in a hurry, with the long wake it's leaving behind, I suppose the military can ignore any speed restrictions through the Bosphorus if they want too. Interesting shot Yildiz.

I watched the submarine make its way through for sometime actually and can't say it was 'that' fast. Submarines use these waters from time to time and not always solo either. They never exceed the speed limits but their routes are all decided earlier to prevent any confusion while on route. So far, we never had any accidents, thank Goodness!

Our military uses the Bosphorus very neatly and carefully... Really so, because any accident in these waters are due to bulk ships that refuse to take guides and tugs just to save a couple of Dollars. And we really had some running into the buildings and people's living rooms that are located on the banks of the Bosphorus. Somehow, either the captain falls asleep or the rudder gets locked!

I was imagining there might be subs belonging too other countries that occasionally go through the channel, actually I wouldn't be surprised if some do but not on the surface.

ps. I've had too start the backup computer too log on to PhotoclubAlpha, the graphics card in the everyday computer finally gave up the ghost this morning (no display) and I went and bought a new one, and I've been trying to get Vista to stop loading the old drivers (or something) ever since. Windows boots up ok in VGA mode but then the screen goes into coloured snowy bands shortly after, and then Windows re-boots again. Using [safe mode] uninstall of the previous graphics card drivers didn't appear too work properly for some reason.

Hmm, yes, I wouldn't be surprised if sumarines of other countries are permitted to pass through either, within legal terms and international pacts, I'd assume. If they do, then they certainly are working efficiently also because we don't have any disturbing news on such matters in shape of accidents, power failure or otherwise. I hope nothing nuclear is passing though. That would really be extremely dangerous for all those living in the region.

After reading your latest problems of display with Photoclubalpha forum, I have to admit to a few problems myself and my graphics card is perfectly fine: Everytime I try logging in to the Board Index my browser takes me to Photoclubalpha Homepage and refuses to open the forum.
This morning everything seems to be working perfectly, so I assume the problem is over for the moment.

Good luck with the calibrations and settings of your new computer. I never even bothered with Vista myself. I like the way Windows XP works and I'll only upgrade to Windows 7 when I think that it's time.

Thanks for the good luck Yildiz, it worked, I think there was a monitor profile being loaded that was for the previous graphics card and once that became active it seriously scruffed up the works and I couldn't install the proper drivers for the new card. Anyway I couldn't find the offending whatever in [safe mode] system mangement startup programs (too much unknown stuff in there) so I just re-installed Vista...problem solved.
I liked XP also, I've still got XP pro and XP std. retail disks as well, but the problem with XP is, it doesn't address anywhere near all your memory, if you've got 4GB of RAM it only addresses around 2.8GB for program space if your lucky, Vista gets much more of it, but still not all, 32 bit OS's can only address a max of 4GB anyway, the 64bit version of Vista/Win7 ultimate can address 128/192GB of RAM, but you then I guess you sortof need 64bit versions of everything too take full advantage.
Ha, we'll finally all get swapped over to 64bit computing and buying 64bit programs etc. then they'll discover the miracle of 128bit computing, won't that be swell.

Greg- I can empathize with your computer problems. My desktop died, taking the hard drive with it, so I've had to re load XP, drivers etc. I hope to have it back to the nice state that it was in when it died. John

Yep thanks John, it's amazing when there is a glitch, in this case just replacing a dud graphics card, it results in so much turmoil, a typical catch22, you can't uninstall the old one properly because there is no screen display, and you can't install the new one properly either because it would not stay in VGA mode long enough to do it, (I tried uninstalling in [safe mode] but that option was not available), and Windows didn't seem to be able too learn that loading 'that' particular driver (whatever) was going to cause a logjam and re-boot once again. grrrr
And now just like you I have to re-install all my programs...again. Lots of luck with your re-build as well John.

I'm happy for you, Greg! I'm aware of how frustrating it can be when you want such things to be the least of your worries...
64bit version does sound good to my ears too. I have two computers at home, so I don't need that kind of memory usage at the moment in any particular computer of mine but I can make a jumpstart with a new system all over again for some of my 3D software that requires and consumes gigantic RAM amounts for rendering and such.

I do believe things will be in progression in leaping form as well. Faster and more frequently than ever before... : )

I had time too have another look at the photo Yildiz, that neat old 'yacht' looks very much like a converted sailing ship too me, with the design of the bow and the still remaining, but smaller most likely, bowsprit, also the superstucture is quite low, except for the funnels of course. They probably took all the sail ballast out and replaced it with engines, and reduced the height of the masts as well. Who knows it might have once been a square rigger, and now it still looks like it could hoist a couple of fore and aft type sails, except for the two missing booms and almost non existant shrouds that is. That's a good capture of a probably quite rare ship type now.

You've been quite observant and I hate to say that this historic yacht, which is called Savarona was never converted from a sailing ship. : ) Sorry!

Savarona was the biggest private yacht built of its time. It looks exactly as it was built by Blohm & Voss in 1931 except for the change to diesel engines from steam turbines.
It was acquired by the Turkish state for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and later was bought and restored by a Turkish businessman to its latest condition.
It's still fully functional and is very beautiful inside.

Ha! a Q ship travelling in disguise, well it 'got' me ha ha, thanks for that Yildiz, very interesting that the Savarona was built to a sailing ship kind of profile but as a powered vessel from the start, it's similar too a clipper ship in overall style, (except for the low superstructure) that's what got me thinking. hmm buillt in 1931, it's still actually quite a historical type of ship then even so.

ps. probably a good thing it was converted to diesel, those old coal fired boilers produced lots of black smoke and soot...kaf kaf
