A700 AF strange behavior? Help.

Unread post by Birma »

:?: While using my A700 today either I or it (or perhaps both of us) got confused. Most of the time I have AF area set to "Local" and this is what I was using. I was using the AEL button to set the exposure, before recomposing on occasion, and changing setting quite quickly so perhaps fumbling the controls. I suddenly noticed that I couldn't switch AF position and on examining the camera I saw that some how I had got in to the Spot AF area setting, rather than the Local AF area that I had started in. Thinking there must be some combination of buttons and control dials that I had pressed by accident, I then hit Fn to try and correct the AF area but found that I could not select this function. In to the Menu, but AF area was greyed out?! Weird I thought. I struggled for about 5 mins to try and find out what I had done to achieve this strange setting but to no avail. I also noticed that AF was refusing to work - the central point would flash, but nothing would happen, just like it does when it is too dark etc.

I switched bodies for the rest of the trip out. When I got home I examined the manual but couldn't find anything. The only thing that got rid of this setting was changing lenses. I changed lens and all was back to normal - I could chose the AF area using either Fn or the menu, and AF was working again. I changed back to the original lens (Tamron 17-50/2.8 ) and everyuthing still worked - phew! Any ideas how I caused this problem?

I would guess that somehow the lens/camera data interface got broken or corrupted. Even static electricity can do that at times. Replacing the lens gave the camera a fresh set of data and allowed the stuck bit to reset.

Sounds like a lens comms problem of some sort, the lens release button signals the camera that a lens is being removed/replaced, maybe for some reason the button hadn't engaged properly when that lens was put on, or maybe the button had received an accidental bump when the AF switch was adjusted, although I just did that on my A700 and it only briefly suspended operation so maybe there is a problem with that particular lens.

Is your AEL button set to "toggle"? if yes then there's your answer.

As far as I know the AEL button doesn't affect AF, unless the AF/MF button has been set too toggle and got accidently pressed while in spot metering mode maybe, can't think of anything else offhand, funny how changing lenses fixed the problem though if that was the case.

Changing the lens may have fixed it because it was powered off/on during the change, or it may have re-set the connection between the contacts, if that was a problem.

Thanks guys for your thoughts and advice - much appreciated. AEL was set to 'Hold', but the * sign was not showing anyway. Operation was fine today with the same lens. However, I reset the camera yesterday as part of trying to sort it out and I have stumbled over the results of this reset all day, culminating in downloading my images this evening and finding I have been in 'Fine' rather than RAW+J, aaaaargh  :( . I'm sure this will not make that much differenece in the end, but it is annoying.
