Flowers 2010

Hi Lonnie, I really like the cactus shot - the contrast of flowers against those nasty looking spikes. I've liked your "wild flowers in the mountain" shots since some of the first of your pictures I saw here so it is great to see more .

I had meant to get back up there this summer and reshoot that. But it was a busy spring summer for me and the wife. She injured her back which turned into a cancer scare in the spring (everything is fine now), got married, moved, new house stuff, preped old house to sell, etc, etc. Just didn't make it. As of yesterday, that spot is under about 1M of snow...

I'm glad to hear your wife is better. The season is changing a bit more gently here. There are actually several things which seem to be coming in to bloom, or at least still going strong. Here is an example.

Pretty blue that one Birma, the arrangement looks sortof similar too a red one here with those little filaments that project out of the flower.

Thanks Greg. This one varies from light blue through blue to purple in the UK. I've looked up the latin name which is Succisa pratensis. Perhaps that helps compare with your red variety?

I don't think it's really the same or similar species or anything, I just recall there was one small one here in the yard on a vine that has a cluster of small flowers but not in a spherical shape, more half spherical, but had those little tassles sticking out, that's what stuck in my memory.

Despite the freezing temperatures the Virburnum bushes in my garden are flowering like crazy (or they were at the weekend anyway ). Here is a shot to remind us of the colours to come in the spring here in the Northern hemisphere, and I'm sure Greg will have some flowers soon in the Southern half (once he can tear himself away from the roof ).

That's a hardy little plant Birma, still producing lots of flowers.

Birma, that's a January flowering bush up here - or maybe JUST before Christmas. In my garden, the most dramatic thing - which I must try to get to - is the apple tree laden with hundreds of apples, all of which are still on the tree but have turned dark brown due to the extreme cold breaking them down. It's like a 30ft diameter huge old Bramley apple tree, covered in rotten apples. Quite novel. They are frozen solid like balls of ice.

It sometimes feels like the Viburnum flowers all year round, although I suspect that after March there are lots of other bright things in the garden to distract me . It struck me today that the thread could be coming to a close soon on the basis it is "Flowers 2010" and I sort of hoped it would be a 12 month cycle of everyone's flowers. So there are just 21 days left to cram some more flowers in to 2010 and then I have to start hunting for Snowdrops for 2011.

I'll try to shoot some late-blooming roses from our garden since not much of a variety at the moment.

It just snowed in Istanbul mixed with rain, dropping the temperature considerably. So, this actually may be the last of the bright coloured fragile flowers for us this year but one never knows, of course! : ))
