99% of P&S cameras don't have EVF and millions of people take billions of photos just fine without a viewfinder. I really hope that Sony does not fall for this nonsense and put EVF on newer Nex models. That would be a huge blunder. No fixed EVF on Nex body please!!! They just need to release an external EVF for the system for anyone who needs it. Don't stick unnessearily doggie-doo on the body and make it unnecessarily large.

Nex is the most sucessful camera that Sony has ever launched (A55 included). They need to stick with the size, put 16 MP sensor, release more prime/small lenses.

I think you will find many users are not entirely happy with just the back LCD on compacts I'm one of them I can just barely tolerate it. As for size there is a big difference between a high end Canon (big and heavy though very solid) and a normal DSLR that isn't that big really nowhere near that size or weight

If you are not happy don't buy it. I don't care about your hapiness. Sticking EVF on Nex would be the dumbest thing Sony could ever do. It would kill the camera (just like Pana G2, G10). Stick with Nex-5 size with the 16 MP sensor. Release external EVF. Release more prime lenses. That will keep Nex #1 seller in 2011.

Sorry I have to use this attachment system but I am struggling just now to get my Web site up with Virgin Media here in Scotland. I get free space - if I can get access that is.
More to the point; here is my improvised solution to an "EVF" on my NEX-5. I have not got at chance to use it in the field, but the advice is that if the sun is a nuisance then just hold your free (left?) hand as a shield above. The magnification is v. good and view covers the whole 3x2 field. Very clear glass as well. Cost me $60 delivered. Perhaps not completely ideal if you need glasses all the time. Anyway that will do me until Sony either release an electronic view finder for the NEX-5 (if wiring is available) or brings out a NEX-7 or whatever with an inbuilt EVF. Might or might not happen. I think they should bring out one a NEX-7E to give customers a choice. There should also be one without for people like OneGuyKs (or a detachable one as also suggested).
Does'nt look to bad in preview so here we go.

Re ClearViewer above, naturally it can also be folded away underneath so you can use the screen unimpeded.

I agree. Personally, I think the rear LCD on the NEX is a mistake too. Remove the LCD, lens, and controls and just have a nifty little metal (only magnesium, of course, or whatever is trendy at the moment) box that feels good in the hand and pocket. A talisman to caress, if you will. Of course, you would then need to raise the price but I don't see that as being a problem since those who care about quality will pay for it. :)

Putting a camera up to your face is the most natural thing in the world you remove distractions you stabilise your hold on the camera/reduce camera shake. I'm not anti move out LCD can be nice too at times but honestly..no VF no interest. And I think more than a few folks would like viewfinders on compacts (of whatever type) Again we're back to the cost cutting conspiracy theory.

I'd just love to meet camera designers who are too concerned with making credit card sized compacts and not enough brain power to actually know how they will be used!

Much as I admire some makers such as Ricoh with their design etc it's astonishing to me they could make a camera such as the GR-D and not have a viewfinder esp a fixed focal length one. Dumb..

Yes I agree the 7 NEX should have an accessory EVF for sure for those times you would want to use it with longer lenses handheld. I'm not sure Henry's more spartan approach would catch on though...

I'm no great NEX expert Lonnie but isn't that the OVF for the 16mm lens? if so it only works for the 16 as far as I know. An accessory EVF that works Live for every lens is what is needed I think, it could turn off the rear screen when you plug it in to save power. (menu option)

LCD is needed. Viewfinder is redundant. At best they can release an external viewfinder for those who need it. Putting it on camera fixed (so that I can't remove it even if I don't want it) wold be dumb.

Nex is just fine as it is -- the system just needs more lenses and better 16 MP sensor.

I'm afraid that NEX without a EVF either as an add in or built in is NOT for me. I have to support Barry on this one.

My main interest in a NEX camera is to use my existing MF lenses on a digital camera and almost all of these lenses are from 35 mm range finder cameras or SLR's. These are not happy snapper lenses

Ok here's a good question so I buy and NEX and the OVF for the WA lens so now..how do I take flash pictures?
We were talking about choices earlier and it's hard to say a VF is redundant for modern photography maybe some don't care but some will.

Ok just check on the users of compact and NEX type of cameras, hand them a DSLR or even a DSLT the first thing they do is hold it out in front of them, I would do the opposite and try to find the view finder to me it is not natural not to use the VF.
As I said before you have two types of camera you then have the personal choice of buying one or the other or both so what’s the problem with that?

Well I guess you would only 'need' an EVF for telephoto lenses, if you were inclined to use a NEX for telephoto that is, so the use of flash at the same time is probably infrequent, I know I use flash with telephoto lenses but I haven't seen many others doing it. In any case they 'could' put the flash hotshoe on top of the eccessory EVF if they wanted to. Whatever...I'm not that bothered either way about telephoto and/or flash on a NEX, although ideally it should have a better solution to flash than at present. I think the camera has potential for me for some use, maybe, with a couple of short lenses, but not the present versions.
We are after all talking hypothetically, the NEX 7 doesn't exist yet, so we don't know for sure what Sony is going to do with the nex t version.
