Might be a very expensive picture... :-) Story behind photo

The title of this thread is " Show everyone the latest shots which make you feel dead chuffed with your camera choice".

Well, this is probably not a artistic or even a great picture ... but there is story behind that it is a one of my best picture justifying my camera choice ....

Yesterday night my parents was giving a bath to the little Evan, and Father Frank wanted to immortalized the moment ... So ... what about taking a special angle picture at water level with the camera with extreme wide angle (because of this tiny bathroom).

Result : I have been able to take a few pictures hopping that the auto focus system will target the subject, but during this exercise something interesting happens ... Thinking that I have enough secure the strap on my hand in case the camera will fall of. My hand was too confident and I didn't not focus my reflex on the camera. Yes hiccup!, the A900 with the lens decided to take a bath too ... and even tried to become a submarine for the moment I been able to reach them in the bottom of the bath.

So ... for those who want to know if the A900 can resist to a underwater situation ... , well after putting the vacuum almost anywhere on the camera and letting it rest for 12h in dry place before to re insert a battery in it I can confirm that the camera is Still working perfectly. Probably the big prism in the view finder help limiting water to stock in the compartment compare to standard mirror system. The lens is is good condition too after putting the vacuum in each different places for about an hour...

Well that is the Best Shot I give you today (it is the picture just before the camera try to swim).

I invited others to share picture in the same story has me. (photo before a expensive ticket, before girlfriend find a secret, etc ).

Gee Frank that it incredible - I hope that was PURE water the camera took a bath in... great photo, but for this you need a NEX-5 with 16mm and the tilting screen!

That is definitely a keeper! Great photo! That would be a fantastic photo to show at his wedding.

I agree, the NEX 5 with 16mm would have worked great for this.

KM 15-35 - River... no problem
Beercan + A700 lake... no problems

A700 and 50mm F1.7 rain storm.. lens was ok neede a cpu board and rear screen and seals replaced.

Just goes to show you never know about water.

Two thing, Frank:

First, next time something like this happens, after vacuuming water out of all the orifices, put everything in a large plastic bag and tale the opening to a vacuum hose. The resulting vacuum will evaporate all the water you can't get to.

Second, I have that same cup to rinse my kids off with in the bath, but had the Turtle, instead of the Frog, toy holder stuck to the wall!

For the Nex 5 + 16mm (kit I have), the angle of view was not enough, this is the reason why I have switch with the A900 + Fish eye. But agree, a tilting screen would have been the best for this situation.

About the water, is it for sure not pure water , but in baby bath of this age lets say that the rules not to put too much soap may help, but there is sure risk about having put some not welcome friend in the lens elements or the camera. Only the future will tell...

With all my previous Canon s45, S70, Fuji F30 I was always using underwater housing to this kind of dangerous situation. But for the moment, the custom housing for the Sony NEX-5 is too much expensive (in fact it cost less to buy a second camera in backup ...). But probably, I will get one soon, because it is too cool to have a camera in outside activity at beach and canoe without scaring of water.

Thanks for the tips about the bag, I know my girlfriend is using special kind of bag to seal clothes on which you can fix the vacuum so I will try next time (hoping there is no next time ).

Evan like to watch when we use the big Frog to get all the toy in the bath, pretty good ingenious system for drying on storage too.

My god ! a River and a Lake, how to you manage to get back the camera easily ? The time it get me to throw out the camera from the water seems to me an eternity ... , I cannot imagine the reaction to find the camera in this condition.

My A700 never got this stress, and I'm suspecting that little humidity have been able to affect the front wheel of the camera, but as today I'm not sure if it was design problem too ... I don't have the camera anymore.

Hi Frank,

Nine exciting and joyful months it's been for you, family and Evan. And more than a few 'risky' endeavours by you it seems. Being a proud father has a potential of making one take some 'unarmed' actions!

But a good photo definitely. Lovely expression on Evan's face and I'm sure you'll always remind him what it might have cost you to take that photo so he's reminded how much you love him. : )


Hopefully, the A900 and the lens won't disappoint you and won't require a trip to any Sony technician for repair.

Great story there Frank and ditto capture! The curious look on young Evan's face is a priceless memory, even if the camera has suffered for it!

Well in the river the lens fell in alone while I was changing them and negotiatng a small waterfall. in the lake I was knee deep and bending over and the strap was hanging off my shoulder. the camera swung down and plowed through the water while my hands were away from it.

Great story.
