That's a very hangable photo. It's the sort of image which wins portraiture prizes from Fuji You might even stand a chance in next year's Sony Awards.

It reminds of 'twins' images by August Sander and Diane Arbus, but without the people. The chairs are rather like the twins in the work of both these photographers, but the setting is more like Irving Penn's field portraiture where he used a tent and portable canvas. In fact, for various reasons, the picture has echoes of the work of several great 20th century photographers. Sometimes, less is more.

It's distracting that I can't see the other side of the tent's rigging. Feels like an uncomfortable crop to me, but otherwise, I think I'd like it.

I'm with Kevin...I also feel the hacked off rigging takes away from what otherwise could be a nice enough photo. The intent was good here, but the crop is fairly big artistic letdown for me. Got any shots with the rigging intact, Doc?

Read the works of Dr Harald Mante on composition, Don. The eye completes what lies beyond the boundary of the frame. Mante showed, most effectively, how something like just a quarter of a bicycle wheel entering a picture implied the completion of the entire bicycle by the viewer's mind (he got students to draw what lay outside the frames he shot with such 'intruding' or incomplete details).

Alongside Minor White's essays on Previsualisation, Mante's original 1960s-70s works (translated from German) are well worth looking at. Especially 'Camera Composition'. I would defend Dr Harout's composition - it is very classical in placing the main subject and the horizon, and the cropped rigging placed at the left side suits Western visual scanning patterns well.
