Nice elephants KB and Henry :)

I was only wondering yesterday if you ride horses up in the mountains Charlie, and now you post pictures of horses :D . In the first shot, is it by design that the horse in the background is showing the parts of the body cutoff from the horse in the foreground? It adds an extra twist to what is already a nice shot.

That face on shot of the Gerenuk is a classic KB. Love all the Elephants, and some great horse studies CW.

Thanks, Greg. The gerenuk is really a much prettier creature than I captured here--a very unflattering pose for it. Seen in full, they are the most supernaturally thin and graceful herd-animals I've ever seen.

Hi Kevin,

Neat shots; very much busy doing what they are meant to do... : )

Hi Henry,

Strangely enough, I had more of a grey colouring on my mind when elephants are the case but yours in the first shot are pretty much blackish. I guess that's because they are covered by dried mud and dirt most of the time...

Great horse shots, Charlie. Always great to see them in nature or in human company. : )

Thaks for sharing,

Yildiz

Usually they are pretty much gray, but in that first shot they are almost black. Actually, it is not because of mud and dust since at this particular moment they are pretty clean. They just finished swimming across the river and are wet so their color is much darker until they are dry again.

By the way, those elephant shots were very late in the day just a bit before the sun went down. It was really cool being on the river and watching all the animals on shore and seeing elephants swimming in the water and also, of course, hippos in the water.

Hi Birma,

Years ago I rode horses in the mountains quite a bit, but now I use one of two special motorbikes.

My daughter is taking riding lessons, hence the shots.

I love this forum for observations like yours about the "other" horse. I had not even noticed that myself!hiccup!

here my almost live motorbike:

bakubo wrote:Thanks, Greg. Lizards are not something we see photos of much here. Here are some very colorful lizards in Zimbabwe in 1993 (scanned slides). I believe that these are Red-headed Rock Agama lizards.

Last month I spent some time scanning over 1300 more of my old slides and negatives and I got a few more lizard photos scanned from that trip to Africa.

Nature usually embellishes creatures with such bright and amazing colours when they have the ability to secrete some powerful poison but these look friendly and interesting enough.
I am pretty sure that these lizards are not poisonous. The colors were just amazing though and they almost seemed unreal. I remember that there were a bunch of them running around on the rocks that day. Now that I think about it I remember that these were in Tanzania, not Zimbabwe. I got confused because I remember seeing some other very interesting lizards on rocks in Zimbabwe and I took some photos of them too, but they were different from these. I am not sure if I have any of the Zimbabwe lizard photos scanned already though.
Here are some of the lizards I saw in Zimbabwe. I scanned these 1993 slides last month.

Awesome shots!

I love elephants, and the shots taken from a boat on the river are very very beautiful.

Nice looking bike Charlie - looks ready for just about anything off road :D .

Those lizard shots are great Henry - something about the stones and the lizards makes me want to go and drink a cold beer right now :D .

Here is a giraffe in Zambia in 1993. I recall that I took this late in the day on Fujichrome 400 or Ektachrome Elite 400 slide film. Man, oh man, those of you who only know about using DSLRs don't know how lucky are. :) These days ISO 400 is nothing, but it used to be high speed and the quality wasn't all that good. If I had to make a rough judgement, I would probably say that the ISO 400 slide film looked about like ISO 3200 or 6400 on my A700. Anyway, it might be a bit hard to see in this photo, but the giraffe is raising his head up from getting a drink of water and there are 2 streams of water falling from his mouth that have caught the sun a bit.
