I agree that’s a whopper jcoffin, good shot too because that looks like it might be a male spider just off the stern quarter, IF he gets to mate with her it’s game over for him afterwards, makes one wonder why he would embark on a suicide mission.

Thanks -- I'm not sure if it really qualifies as a particularly good shot nearly as much as a lucky one. I just walked out a door, and there it was. About the only credit I could possibly take would be for holding the camera steady when I was a bit nervous. I generally like spiders, but this one was big enough to make me jittery (though I've since checked and I'm pretty sure it's basically harmless).

I totally agree - the lighting is not ideal on either of the other two - some blown pixels/harsh light and I would not submit either of those to stock or competition. It's nice to know you noticed

It's really too bad the light wasn't a bit softer for the first shot -- the subject matter is great, and you did about as well as anybody could in that kind of light.

I'd have fewer good shots of insects and such if I was female -- a white shirt can work nicely to diffuse or reflect light (or both)...

This one was in the house (he's about 4" toe to toe) and very annoyed (i suspect) when i put it in a dish to take a shot of it, still served him right for running across the carpet.:-

Nice clean spider. I never kill ours but they are not so photogenic and look dusty and dark in comparison, even when they are big. I know we have woodlice, silverfish and many other guests in our very old house so the spiders are welcome.
