I thought it would be a good thread to have you post any landmark that is not a typical, popular tourist attraction or
a popular one in an uncommon composition, setting. The idea is that it makes you wish you knew about it during your trip
or you will make a note of visiting it when you are there next time around.

Here are some from Hadrian's villa in Tivoli. This is not very popular tourist site, I am told.

Interesting idea Sury. I like the pictures of Hadrian's Villa, especially as his "Wall" is about the most famous ruin from antiquity that we have here in the UK, so it is easy for us to forget he had spent his 'down' time in much more comfortable surroundings.

Here is my interpretation. This was taken at Witley Court (see my pictures in the Statue and BW threads) which has lots of very eye catching things to photograph; fountains, ruins, formal gardens, etc. However, just over the boundary wall there is this fabulous tree (known to me as "The Doc's tree" since he noticed it in the background of one of my pictures some years ago) and this year the tree is sitting in a splendid yellow field of Oilseed Rape. Nobody but me seemed very interested in it .

I like your shots and the idea for the thread Sury. Did you notice that parachute in the upper left corner of the first image? Is this your interpretation of Where's Waldo?

I almost forgot about the Hadrian's wall. In fact I did not make that connection till you mention it.
Mark, sharp eyes. I did not notice that one. Good catch.

Thanks Mark . It was a really bright, sunny day which helped the colours, and the field is actually a crop of Oilseed Rape (a crop grown for vegetable oil) which is probably why it looks a bit bright for grass.

Thanks Sury . Lovely detail in those Tivoli shots. There was me thinking Tivoli was a popular brand of systems admin software (little joke for the IT people out there!).

Different place, different time and different camera....


When people shoot Louvre, it is usually the quintessential Pyramid. Here is the side entrance.

At night time. Poor light. So I put the camera on 2 second timer, let it lie flat on the ground and took a 1/4s shot. As I was experimenting,
a small crowd gathered around me wondering what I was doing and when I explained how I am trying to get a "flat" image without bending over
backwards, there were some "I see"s around. My family was much amused that I am actually giving a photography lesson to strangers. Few minutes
later I see about half a dozen trying the same. I felt so vindicated.

I was working in a new location last week, near Epsom in Surrey. I knew that Epsom was famous for its race course, and perhaps the ultimate flat race in the UK, "the Derby". What I was very surprised by was the amazing views over London there are if you look away from the race course. While in London I've never really thought of it as being very flat, and so I was surprised that this sort of view of the City, with its iconic sky-scrapers (note below the Shard), existed. I've never seen this view represented before, although this is a very popular view point (and golf course!). I grabbed these shots with my Nex while passing .

An early morning golfer enjoys the spring sunshine, as well as the view.
