I had a read about the Ishtar Gate when I had a minute and that sort of transferred into reading about early religions of the region, delving into that could go on and on.
Anyway they sure could do some impressive architecture in such an early time period, it makes one feel a bit more humble, we moderns aren’t as clever as we think we are. It’s a great pity so much was vandalized and not preserved down through the ages though, an abomination like the burning of the great library in Alexandria for instance, it was actually attacked more than once, the last time by a Pope.
Even the Egyptian Pharaohs used to vandalize the temples and statues belonging to the previous Pharaoh so that the population could concentrate on worshiping the current one and not the previous one.
Thieves made off with antiquities and treasures everywhere since time began, if they could find them and disappear with a whole skin that is, the Giza pyramids are a case in point.
With Babylon we probably don’t even know fully what we have lost, the region was in turmoil very often, it’s easy to believe that many great things have been gone missing there though the ages.

Babylon, certainly is a region to study and learn from, truly. And I agree with all the rest that you elaborately put down, Greg. :)

Maybe after some brave archeologiacal excavations and proper protection in the museums and on sites, we'll see just how rich a history lies beneath the soil and sand.

I just realized that you really know more about the certain region than some who live in the region itself. : )

Thanks for sharing and yes, I do have some colourful memories of my own that I treasure.

Thanks for that Yildiz, :D but I don't know all that much apart from some TV doco's and skimming through some Wiki articles here and there. But it sure would be nice to see the near/middle east calm down for a change and get along with one another.

Not at all, Greg. : ) I agree with the wish for some peace in the region after thousands' of years worth of rivalry and animosity. Hope it happens in our lifetime.

It is amazing how we transitioned from food to "food for thought". :D

Thanks, Greg.

Yes, I guess as long as you like minced meat and spinach the dish tastes delightful. :) Very easy to make though.

Wow! I am so far behind on GIYBS in general, and was about 10 pages behind on this thread! Too long away, so many things making demands on my time.

Here, to contribute in one small way to this thread, is Lemon Pepper Chicken. You may notice that it's still "On the Hoof" as they say, but that's because she's still laying eggs. Each of my girls know what happens to chickens when they stop laying, so we have "Lemon Pepper" and "Bar-B-Que" for 2 of the names. "Eyeball Head" (named by Lilly, 5, who thinks eyeballs are the coolest thing in the world) will be "Eyeball" (chicken) stew, and "Picky Wicky", whom Emma renamed from "Fried".

Hi,

:) Today's menu:Stuffed Vine Leaves, stacked like logs, with pickled beet stems and pepper in a pool of Yoghurt but the yoghurt cannot be seen due to excessive lighting of the scene. (The sunlight wore of too soon for the weather and I was forced to use artificial light source.)
The stuffing comprises rice, ground beef, chopped onions, tomato paste and parsely. Pretty tasty, I declare....

Bon Appetit. :D

Hi Yildiz, that dish made me remember we used to have something very similar when I was a bit younger, we didn’t have access to grape vine leaves out in the bush so we improvised and used cabbage leaves (softened in hot water) rolling the filling up in them before baking in a tomato based sauce, (probably something like this http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/19317/g ... bage+rolls ) very nice they were from memory.
Yours look and sound delicious as well, probably a tad spicier but that is most likely what was missing from ours, I think they could have done with a little extra spark come to think of it. :)

Yes, you can say that again, Birma. :) It certainly keeps the hunger pangs at bay.

Thanks, Greg. :)

I love the version wrapped in cabbage leaves too, Greg. A favourite of my country and all the regional countries. Cabbage version is delicious too and cooked almost in the same way you described, in a specially made tomato sauce.

:) Something to keep the bones warm in cold days after a day's outing this time.

Here's something not so special to any particular region of the World: Cholate Pudding and Coffee. Everyone in the World knows what it tastes like and how it's made; milk, bitter chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, chocloate shavings, hazel nuts and almonds and a little sprinkled cinnamon powder on top.

Bon appetit!
