If you can get to a show (like Focus on Imaging in the UK) there are several stands with many tripods which allow for a sensible assessment and judgement on the best to buy.
demonstrating the full rnage of Manfrotto heads on a table and you could play with them. They were also giving out a CD with Manfrotto, Gitzo and National Geographic product information.
Same goes for camera bags, the dealers don't stock the complete ranges for display.
